I have liability insurance only. My insurance has a high pay out for people who are injured and etc. I think it's around $250 k. I am lending my car to my boyfriend who has his car in the shop. If he would happen to get into an accident (god forbid), how would the insurance work? Do you think my insurance would cover the damaged vehicle and the injured people even though I wasn't driving it?

Ok, I was reading my insurance policy and this is what it says:

We will pay damages for bodily injury or property damage for which any insured becomes legally responsible because of an auto accident.

Then below it reads:

Insured as used in above means:
B. any person using your covered auto with the expressed or implied permission of you or any family member while within the scope of such permission.

I'm guessing that means yes?

Yes. However, does he have regular access to your car? If he borrows it more than once a month, or more than ten times a year, you should add him as an operator.

Also, if he cracks it up, it's great that the other guy is covered, but . . .can you afford to buy a new car? Because you won't have any coverage for YOUR car.

A five minute phone call to your insurance company will tell you everything you want to know. Not all companies work the same. Another thing, loaning a car isn't a good idea and especially if he has had it for 4 months. He's taking advantage of your generosity. Then he didn't even have the decency to notify you of the accident. Get the car back before you end up in in a big lawsuit some day..

ok, half the people answering this have no idea what they are talking about. the answer is YES as long as he has your permission to drive it and he is licensed. if he has an accident your insurance will be primary and his secondary. this means your company will pay the claim, but if it goes over your limits, they can go to his company also. insurance follows the auto, not the driver! if he has an accident and your company pays out, the claim WILL show up on your clue report and even though HE may have caused the accident, YOUR company pays which can raise YOUR premiums, depending on your companies policies.

Please call your insurance company directly and ask them that question . Do not take a chance and decide this on your own . Make sure you then see it somewhere in writing if they say it is a fact that you are insured . It is just not worth it . Better your bf rents a car than to screw up your life for good if he has a serious mishap. It can happen to all of us .Someone could also hit him and injure him seriously .
I did this myself as I was very concerned when my adult son
came for a visit and planned to take my car .We do all we can for our loved ones, but let's be sensible.LOL

Your insurance covers the listed drivers and anyone you give permission to drive your car.

Liability car Insurance follows the driver, so if he doesn't have insurance DO NOT LET HIM DRIVE YOUR CAR

Comprehensive covers damage to the vechicle

Thats a yes as long as the other driver is licensed. BUT... the surest way is to call your broker or agent and ask directly. Better to find out for sure up front then to be slapped with a huge lawsuit.

You know, Queen B....I think that it is MORE than half!

Depending on the State where you live, your boyfriend's liability could even pay for damages to YOUR auto - if he were negligent.

But short answer.......... DON'T LOAN YOUR CAR TO ANYONE! I didn't even let my PARENTS drive my car - PERIOD!

Good luck and I hope this helps!

THEY MAY OR THEY MAY NOT, I WOULD CONTACT THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND FIND OUT FOR SURE, BUT ONE THING THAT I DO KNOW IS THAT YOU WILL BE LIABLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HE DOES IF THE INSURANCE DOES NOT COVER HIM.
