7zip is totally free (open-source) and replaces winrar and winzip and more! In fact, it supports MANY other compression formats too - you can uncompress and compress to any of the supported formats. It's all I use and am VERY happy with it!

Get it here:

OK, here is a link, but you should also consider Winzip, it is a very excellent program, and can open everything WinRar can and more. You can find both in the same Downloads site at CNET. Here is a link:

Here is a link for Winzip:

Now, neither of these are actually "free" software programs. They each have a trial period, however, after the trial period is over you can continue to use Winzip, I know for sure, but am unsure for WinRar. I suppose it would be the same for both. When you use the program after the trial period, just click, Continue to use Evaluation Version button, and you will be allowed to use it forever, but you will not get the updates or fixes.

When you can afford too, I reccomend purchasing a key for the program you choose, because it is worth all the extra featrues, and the updates to each new release. However, I know you don't have too, and instead, to get updates, you can remove the version you have currently, then download and install the newest version.

Good luck and Winzip has an excellent Help feature, which has all sorts of methods of teaching Users how to get all from its features. I have never used WinRar, but found Winzip excellent. It is a personal choice, so whichever you decide will work for you, as Winzip does for me.

You cannot get a free version in WinRar unless it is illegal. As already suggested try 7-zip. Its 100% free and compresses/expands almost any other format including its own 7z format which generally gets better compression than zip or rar.

Winrar says that it is a demo, but the demo version is fully functional with no time limit, so really you can just use the version on their site.
