Look at it this way: If you routinely washed the dishes every night with soap, water and a sponge, and then decided not to use the sponge and just put soap on the dishes, then rinsed them, would they be clean? No, they wouldn't. They'd simply have soap residue on them, and probably food as well.
This is what would happen if you put toothpaste in the trays...
You need to physically brush your teeth to remove the bacteria and debris.........'soaking' them in toothpaste just won't do the trick.

i think what you have is a bleach tray and putting toothpaste in wouldn't help very much. However, if you went and got the specific bleach from your dentist and used it in the trays for the amount of time your dentist tell you it should keep your teeth white and even whiten them.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD QUESTION.
I DO UNDERSTAND YOUR QUESTION.
IT IS THE MECHANICAL ACTION OF BRUSHING THAT REMOVES PLAQUE FROM TEETH AND THE TOOTHPASTE HAS REALLY NO EFFECT OF THIS.
YOU CAN BRUSH WITH A TOOTHBRUSH ALONE OR ONE COATED WITH CHICKEN SOUP, THE RESULTS WILL BE THE SAME.
SO THEN, IS USING TOOTHPASTE POINTLESS?
NOT AT ALL. TOOTHPASTE HELPS IN TRAPPING THE PLAQUE BEFORE YOU SPIT IT ALL OUT AND IT ALSO IT CONTAINS FLUORIDE TO HELP PREVENT DECAY.
THE COATING OF YOUR TEETH WITH JUST TOOTHPASTE AS WITH A TRAY FOR BLEACHING OR IN FLUORIDE TREATMENTS WILL NOT DO WHAT A TOOTHBRUSH WILL.

No. Toothpaste is like soap for the teeth. Would you be any cleaner if you took a bath vs a shower?

it wouldn't clean your teeth if that's what you're asking.
you are more likely to swallow too much fluoride and become sick.
if you have sensitive teeth you could do this with some sensitivity toothpaste and it would would help. or you could just get a prescription for fluoride gel from your dentist and accomplish the same thing.

I doubt it'd do anything good for your teeth at all. Toothbrushes are what clean your teeth and keep them from plaque build-up because of the bristles.
