She got her first one in September and now she woke up with one again today. I feel so bad for her and was wondering is there some natural remedy or even something OTC that would help her? I've been putting Carmex on it. Thanks for answers.
BTW she is almost 4 years old.

my husband and i get cold sores. it's true that once you start getting them, you get them for life. at least in my case, the first one or two were by far the worst. the only thing i've found that works is abreva (wicked expensive ... possibly because it's the only thing that works). it works better if you put it on when you feel a tingle before the cold sore appears. if she starts getting a cold or gets a fever, it's likely it will reappear. it also can reappear for other reasons like stress. it's otc, but i don't know if it's safe for kids, so check with pharmacist or doctor first.
and yes, cold sores are very contagious and many people have them. and yes, it's a form of the herpes virus, but not the same as the kind of herpes that you're all thinking of. tons and tons of people get cold sores, it's no big deal.

My daughter has had them before when she was ill. The DR gave her a medication taken orally and it went away in a day or so. As far as cold sores being contagious, I'm not sure about that. I don't think you can get them from eating or drinking behind someone. I have never had a cold sore and my husband gets them several times a year.

Canpho-phenique...used it all my life. As soon as I feel one coming on I start using it. Just be sure not to get it in the eyes.
I tried that abreva, omg that stuff is horrible. Sure it dried up the cold sore quickly but it did it so well that it dried up my skin as well, so bad that I was left with this huge scab, that ended up lasting longer than my cold sores usually last. And that dried skin was SO painful.

I agree with gypsy. I used the abreva that made it last longer than if I had left it alone. I generally let it be. You might want to get like some campho phenic for when she eats. It kind of numbs it. Other than that you can get her some chap stick to put on it. I like to keep mine moist. Once you use the chap stick on it though throw it away b/c if one of ya'll used it after wards it could cause another one. I would ask her if her tummy hurts any. I only get them when I am sick ( running a fever) or if my tummy has been bothering me ( diarrhea).

Yes, my daughter is 5 and gets them. She can use Zovirax, although I wouldn't advise it.
We use lavendar oil on our daughters, you can get it from the chemist or a shop like boots.
They are annoying but nothing can be done unless it gets infected.
