3 Other kids were sent home with lice. She was not because they only found a few nits. The nurse said to treat her like she has a full fledged infestation. How do I prevent her from getting them again. 2 of the kids are her close friends. Any tips on what to do? I looked thru her hair and pulled out 2 nits but they came out easily. I thought nits stick to the hair shafts like glue. These were about 2-3 inches from scalp.

You can't prevent them absolutely, you just take precautions. No head-to-head contact with others and use a tea-tree oil shampoo to deter them. Doesn't stop them though.

You have to use a lice shampoo treatment as just because the nurse didn't see any live ones, doesn't mean there aren't any! They are notoriously difficult to see and catch as they are quite fast and camoflaged.

Follow the pack instructions to the letter. If you catch any live ones, split them with your fingernails (sorry!) and dump into a jug of hot water, along with any eggs.

Go through her hair fine section by fine section, clipping the finished strands out of the way as you go. Do her head in thirds approximately.

The eggs can be anywhere on the hair-shaft. Usually around 2cm away from the scalp, but not limited to here.

Ask your daughter not to touch heads/share hats/combs or brushes with her close friends.
Speak to the other mothers to make sure they are going to treat their daughters now too.
Keep your daughters hair tied back and not loose, so that even if they sit close together their hair does not entwine.

Nits don't actually jump, they just transfer by head-to-head contact. They can't survive long off the head either.
Doesn't matter if the hair is clean or dirty, they like both!

It takes a long time to groom hair for these nasty parasites, so put on a movie and get settled for an hour or so.
Check every day thoroughly for at least three days, preferably a week. You'll be amazed you missed some!

Good luck.

I don't know why the nurse didn't tell you how. Blue Star ointment kills crab lice and eggs. There is special shampoo to kill off the nits, the larvae of lice, and the eggs that will hatch into nits and grow into lice. Go see your pharmacist. As a layman, I'd recommend a short haircut to make it easier to manage for the next month. All clothing and bedclothes, couches where the children may sit need decontamination. Bleach may kill them on clothing in the wash. Furniture? I don't know. Pharmacist may. This is a common affliction these days, nothing to be ashamed of. You can help the other children and their families deal with it too, educate the whole school community about it because it happens again and again. Your health department may have brochures, posters, and advice. Children need to be advised not to share hats, scarves, coats, any other clothing that can transfer the infestation among people. Even hugging is a chance for the transfer of infestation. Good luck. Just another aggravation you'll hopefully only have to deal with once. Google nits or lice and see if you can get more info.

If they're that far then it was from a while ago.
Get some of the nit remover stuff and comb through her whole head. There must have been lice there in order to lay eggs. Wash all bedding and everything in hot hot water and with bleach if possible.
Make sure she knows not to share combs/brushes whatever.
I put tea tree oil in my daughter detangler to keep away any bugs she might come into contact with. They don't like it :-)
Good luck!! And it's really common with young kids

If the nits are further than an inch from the scalp they are dead eggs. The lice lay the nits right next to the scalp, and no further down the hair shaft.

Anything past that has been attached to the hair for a long time and has grown out.

I would still go through the motions and get some Rid. Then wash her bedding.

But don't worry too much about them.

You have to buy lice spray for your furniture and hair products and comb her hair with the comb provided until you get every nit out. You have to put away all stuft animals for 2 weeks that will kill anything on them. Everything you can must be washed and spray all your furniture with the spray. Make sure she doesn't share hats and combs with any other children. Also if she has to share a cubbie with someone at school have her put her hat in her back back. Usually the do stick to the hair shaft and about a 1/2 inch from the scalp. Does she have any little red bumbs at the nap of her neck. If yes then she has lice. I would wash her hair with lice wash to be on the safe side even if you don't see anything else.

Treat her hair, make sure and go through it and pull out all nits and use alot of conditioner at the end. Nits and Lice can't stick to soft hair. I would also put her hair up until Christmas break starts and tell her to not put her head real close to others. Good Luck, dealing with Lice and nits is a bummer.

Go to the drug store and buy shampoo made for head lice and nits and use a nit comb to get ALL the nits out (this will be a very long process). Be sure to wash all her bedding and clothes in hot water and put them in the dryer. If her hair is long be sure to pull it back into a pony tail when going to school. Unfortunately if other kids at the school have them she may get them again. Check her hair and scalp every few days to make sure she doesn't have them again but if she does you can get rid of them before they hatch.

There's always the chance that it was just dandruff and they were being extra cautious but i would still treat her just to be safe. Go to your local drugstore and pick up Rid shampoo. Wash her hair with that and remove all nits with a lice comb. I would also wash any hats and bedding that she has been in contact with. T o avoid it in the future send her in with her hair pulled back or braided and always put a little hairspray or mousse in her hair because this also deters them (contrary to popular belief lice like clean hair much better then dirty).Caution your daughter about sharing hats, clothing and hairbrushes with other people.
