I finish with my degree in April, I am suppose to get a pell dispursment of 1700 in NOV and then one in march. Instead of giving me my pell this month they took it and paid for the rest of my classes and are going to give me everything left over in march. Can they do this? i thought pell went directly to me, not to pay for the classes themselves, thats what my student loans are for. my computer is breaking down and I was looking at this money to get me a new one.

The university can see fit to do whatever they want with your financial aid. You will probably get a big pay-out in March. Anytime I've ever had a Pell Grant the money from it paid for my classes.

Pell is under new rules and regulations as of about two years ago, thanks to Congress.
If you read your agreement, (you should have received one), it should state on there that Pell can pay for your classes if they want to. (I'm paraphrasing, forgive me).
Pells have also been cut down in how much they will lend to a student. You'd better double check to see if they will be giving you any money at all come March.
The government found out that too many people were using the money for other things like cars and stereos. So yes, they can pay for your classes. But if they are paid for, I don't think they will be giving you any money in March, You should go to your school's financial aid office. They cant tell you there. I think you have to apply for it each year also.

NO, a Pell grant does not go directly to you so that you can buy a new computer. It pays for your classes first. You aren't going to die if you get the computer in March instead of right now, be glad you even get a refund.
