I have just been reading this fascinating book about all the famous explorers like Columbus, Magalhaes, James Cook. It was really astonishing to read all the hardship people on those ships had to go through at that time. It took Magalhaes 3 months to get from Miss Horn to Mariana Islands without seeng a land. James Cook spend 8 months traveling from England to Tahiti and that was in the mid 18th century. Doesn anyone here have any nautical skills or experience and can give me examples of how long modern days ship journeys take? E.g. cross Atlantic trips or trips from Europe to Asia on a ship. Any comparisons with the journeys I mentioned?

modern cruise ships will do 25 miles an hour.

Some high speed container ships can do 30.

Magellean and Columbus were lucky to do 5.

Cook, maybe 8.

As a comparison, New York to England by sailing ship from 1500-1850 would be three weeks or so. The record under sail is the schooner yacht Atlantic in 1904, 12 days and 4 hours.

the liner SS United States, in 1954, did it in 3 days and 4 hours , for an AVERAGE speed of 40 miles an hour.

It is indeed remarkable what those guys did under sail, with bad food, stinking water, no vitamins, and no good way of knowing your longitude till 1820.......

Most cruise ships can do 20 to 22 knots but usually cruise at 17 to 20.

the Queen Elizabeth-2 can do in excess of 32 knots but the service speed is about 28 knots.

the Queen Mary-2 can do almost 30 knots
