I want to take a semester off of school. I've been going to college now for 5 1/2 years. I feel so burned out and drained. I am also worried because I get off my parents insurance in 2008 in May. I want to work and get my own insurance so that I'm not screwed over. What do you think is this a good or bad idea. I would work while I go to school but it's hard for me because I have a learning disability. Any suggestions for me?

It depends how much you have left. If you only have a semester left, then you should toughen up and finish it so you can be done. I understand on feeling burnt out, but once you say "i'm gonna take some time off" it's sooooo hard to go back.

i know, everyone says its so hard to go back, and the person says "no i reallly will go back" but then, they learn. once you stop going, you really dont want to go back.

Although the decision is completely up to you, I would probably stick it out if I only had a semester or two left. One bad thing about taking a break is that if you wait too long to go back to school (longer than 6 months), you will have to start repaying your student loans if you have any. Then, when you do graduate, you will not get another 6-month grace period from your loan providers because you have already used that time.
I know your situation. I am also have been in school for 5 1/2 years now, but I am glad I have stuck it out and have acheived a lot of my goals. Once I'm done, I am never going to have to go back to school, and I can focus on my professional career instead. Good luck on your decision!

It has pluses and minuses.

I know a number of people that have tried that and around half never end up going back to school.

If you need insurance and/or money, its pretty necessary, but it could lead you to not finishing what you've started.

How far along in your education are you? If you're a junior or senior, and you don't go back to school, you've wasted a lot of cash. Just be careful that you don't get pulled away.

There is a feeling of freedom that comes from not having to go to school, and that is hard to shake off. If you in any way doubt your willpower to go back, and even if you don't, then be real careful about taking "time off."
