Probably driving unless you can get some very cheap fares. It is about 1500km from Wangaratta to the Gold Coast. If your car does 10 litres for 100km (I get that in my old Commodore), you will need 150litres for the trip. At $1.50 a litre that's $225. With a smaller or more efficient car you will get better economy and it will be cheaper. Petrol will probably be under $1.50 a litre too, I took that as an extreme figure.
You have to add the cost of food and probably accommodation to that if you are driving but you also have to add the cost of taxis and transfers if you are flying. If there are two of you going, driving will be much cheaper.
Check out the prices of airfares online. Look at Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar and see what you can come up with. If you can get a better deal than driving, take it but don't guess at the driving costs, work it out for your car then you know where you stand.

1) Weather should be gorgeous and hot in Nov - I too would recommend early Nov to avoid the crowds. 2) The school holidays don't start until 15 Dec 2007 but private schools finish earlier, and Year 12 students finish even earlier. You should still be able to get something half decent for that sort of money (although it's really at the lower end of weekly rents on the coast - most decent hotels will charge you that for just 2 nights!) - there is just such a wide variety of accommodation available on the Gold Coast. 3) There's a discount shopping centre called Harbour Town at the northern end of the coast - the bus will get you there. 4) There are huge markets each weekend at Carrara. ps - Beenleigh is a hole and you couldn't pay me to stay there - no wonder it's cheap! Stradbroke and the Sunshine Coast are boring compared to the Gold Coast!

It would be cheaper to fly. If you can get to Albury, NSW airport, about 70km north east of Wangaratta, you can fly directly to Sydney then direct to the Gold Coast. Fly with Qantas from Albury to Sydney then with Virgin Blue or Jetstar to the Gold Coast. Should cost you all up under $200 one way compared to driving about 1500km to the Gold Coast from Wangaratta which could cost a fortune if you don't have a small car.

ive never heard of wangaratta, but I assume that's in orsinium, but if you want to get to the gold coast quickly, simply fast travel to Anvil and walk the rest of the way

I would say fly.
Driving (with the price of petrol) and food and accom along the way and sundry expenses, it would cost more than flying.
Time wise it would be a lot longer too.
