A smart shopper will stock up on what they use anyway, frozen or canned, if it saves money.

A healthy shopper will read labels and choose foods that are better for them.

An idiotic person will intentionally buy foods FOR the preservatives, unless they are preparing for an extended time period without going out or building a bomb shelter.

It all depends on the circumstances.

How about E. buys fresh, local and organic seasonal produce for maximum nutritional content. Freezes food from local farms to use throughout the winter to reduce energy use that goes into frozen foods. Stocks up on the essentials- rice, beans, flour, honey, etc for easy cooking later.
