Last night when attempting to clean my 3 year olds ear.. i was trying to take the cue tip and put it only at the end of the ear opening and clean around it.. he inadvertantly moved toward the cue tip and it entered his ear quite quickly, he started crying and i imediatly looked inside to see a small bit of blood, it scared me so I watched it and by the time my husband got home he was sleeping and i figured ill call the dr in the morning.. did i puncture his ear drum.. i feel terrible and i just want to know if anyone has ever done this before and what are some problems.. just getting an idea till the dr can see him.. thank you.

Well, you learned firsthand why you should never, EVER use a cue tip to clean someone's ear, especially a toddler's. To clean a little one's ear, all you need to use is a wash cloth around the outside. If you want to get wax that's trapped inside the ear, soak the washcloth in warm water and then hold it to the ear while your son tilts the side of his head down.
You may have punctured his ear drum, but you most likely just injured the inside of his ear. Either way, a trip to the pediatrician is definitely in order. I hope he's OK.

Its possible! However you would know if you had...he wouldnt have been able to sleep. When you burst the ear drum, it sounds like a rushing of wind past the ear. It would have been too noisy for him to sleep. You should however take him to the doctor and get it checked out because there probably is some damage. Using cue tips in your ears is dangerous but there are some products out there you can use to clean his ears. In australia we have audiclean, it disperses wax and cleans the ear. Clean the outter edge of the ear with a wet face washer....he'll be fine, but just make sure by taking him to the gp =]

You might have punctured the ear drum, no way to tell untill the doctor takes a look inside the ear. It was just an accident so dont be too hard on yourself. In the future i would only use a wash cloth to clean around his ears.

Sounds like you busted his ear drum or hurt it. Next time just use a soft tissue around his ear (somewhat inside as well) instead of putting anything into his ear itself.

I've had a busted ear drum, and it hurt for awhile but then after the initial pain was gone, it was like trying to hear underwater, or hear things from far away.

You would know if you ruptured his ear drum. There would be tons of drainage.

There is really no reason to use a q-tip in a childs ear. If, while give your child a bath, you allow a small amount of water to enter the ear canal, the water will help work the wax out ( mostly by melting it). q-tips only compact the wax, requiring a doctors visit to removed the impacted wax. Contrary to what most parents have heard, allowing a water into the ear canal will not cause an ear infection.

Good luck

You should never clean a child's ear with a regular q-tip. They make infant q-tips that are wider so they won't fit into the ear canal. You should clean the opening, but NEVER put ANYTHING into the ear canal. You could very well have punctured his ear drum, and you should have called the doctor as soon as it happened. Blood coming out of his ear constitutes emergency in my eyes.

You obviously didn't intend to hurt your son. Accidents happen, and this is just one of them.

He should be fine until you get a chance to have a doctor look at him.

well as a parent it does happen so dont feel guilty.just make an appointment and bring him.the doctor will probably tell you to give him some pain medicine if he complains, thats it.there is nothing you can do if you did pop it,it has to heal on its own, just dont worry.
