my work offers tuition reimbursement of up to $5k per year. I would love to take advantage of this but my only hesitation is that if i quit, get laid off, or get fired within a year from the date that i was reimbursed, then I owe them anything they paid me for education within the year. I have no intentions of leaving and I don't feel I'd be let go anytime soon...

my fear is that if a better paying job or better opportunity came around and I took the new job if I left the company and have to pay back what I was reimbursed, financially that would set me back...

also would I have to pay it all back in one lump sum?? would i have to make payments? can they really do that to me?

These are all questions you need to consult with your HR department.

Most companies do have a clause that states you must stay with the company for "x" time after accepting tuition.

But you'd also be surprised at the MANY companies that don't make you sign such an agreement. I would ask the company for tuition reimbursement documentation. If it's not listed (having to stay "x" time) then I wouldn't mention it. Because if you mention it they may or may not quickly add the clause.

If you didn't get it in writing before accepting the tuition then they can't really go after you for it.

As far as repayment schedules I'm sure they wouldn't expect it in one lump sum given the fact that you asked for tuition reimbursement in the first place. If you had that kind of cash you probably wouldn't be working there or asking them to reimburse. But again you would need to consult with their terms and conditions.

Best wishes.

You need to ask HR what their policies are on tuition reimbursement. If you leave before the time is up, you most likely will have to pay them back. But every company is different as far as paying them back goes.
People really can't answer this question for you because they don't know what your company policies are.
So go to HR and find out. That's what they're there for, to answer questions.

Tuition reimbursement happens after each term/semester. If you're taking a course, you have to submit the grade to your work to get the reimbursement. So if you quit after your course is over, so what, you kept your part of the bargain when you completed the course.

talk to the person that deals with that. I work for publix and they reimburse there too. Usually the social worker or someone of that nature handles that kind of thing, Just ask around your work place im sure that someone will help you :)

oh and fyi Im not eligable for reimbursement b/c i am not going into a field that will help publix in the future. What a crock.

are you sure those are the correct conditions? in jobs I had you would pay back only if you quit, in my case I never quit I just took a medical leave as a way to escape. also there is certain length for example if you took it you have to stay with the company for the next 6 months check it out before you make that decision because they can not expect anyone to stay there forever
