I just got back from the a bar where I was talking to some Expats. We were swapping traffic horror stories and a Korean woman who just came back after years in the States said she hates the attitude here (in Korea) these days. I was shocked. The Expats all agreed with her. They said that in the 80's and early 90's Koreans were much more friendly than now. So, I guess my question is, is it true?

I would aprecitate it if you put your age and when you first came to Korea in your response.
(I am 29 and came to Korea in '99)

I am 34, born in Korea and stayed there until 95.
In 80's Koreans were friendly to each other but... was very closed society, they didn't know what to do in front of foreigners, and had a lot of bias about races.
Korea start to open up more in early 90's. With more of experience, we are learning the biases were wrong.

From middle 90's many workers & brides from other Asian countries come, again many bias were spread since... we never experienced them before, yet a lot of view's been corrected by now.

By the way, Koreans are not that friendly to each other nowadays, mainly after the economic crisis of 1997 (we simply call it IMF) I guess many people lost their inocent good heart when they are going through the crisis... Young people are still very friendly and open minded.

they've changed greatly. like how whan u get out of college and found ur place in the world by "achieving ur goals". u might dress better and meet new friends and figure on changing ur attitude in ur achieved world for the better. if ur asking if they've changed in a more snobbish way, that depends on ur attitude in viewing the society in question. this goes for not just the society that might be in question but it can be in the society, u or anybody that can currently be in. i'm sure before u joined the armed forces u felt u didn't belong and now being deployed to some foreign land full with patriotism, hasn't ur view and attitude in ur world changed?

oh, there r few koreans in korea that lived abroad and think they r not from this society at all. maybe it's because they've been kissing to much as* in at where they've made their new life, and just sat in a bar full of foreigners to say what they've wanted to hear. unlike me to be challenged in a cheap shot unarmed battle of wits.

could of sworn u were yamato but anyways my question was in a conjunction form of words, such as "might be" not an accusation.

oh, and one more thing. u've miss spelled appreciate, it happens whan ur in a rush. no ones perfect, i guess. peace out borther

i am 32 and i just went to korea in october 2007...
Koreans are much more open nowadays( more superficially) but they are still steeped in their roots and culture in many ways... Koreans are very helpful esp on the subway etc.... and they go the extra mile.... really.... but if you make them angry.... then.... you do not want to meet an angry korean..
generally they are just like anyone else anywhere....they have their moments
