why do we care so much what the other side think isnt it enough just to assure ourselves we're right and not try to convert the other side to our argument

i say this because a lot of my fellow scientists constantly berate religeon for "trying to convert them"
when those same scientists will spend hours berating christians about evolution in essence trying to convert them

just live and let live right

i ask again why does it matter so much to us that everyone thinks the way we do

reply to first answer: screw that dude, we built the hydrogen bomb, not the vatican, we cultivate anthrax, not the church, i would very much consider those activities to be amoral and detrimental to all of humanity

There are those who use the theory of evolution as a proof that the world has not been created by God and that man is simply a higher animal without an immortal soul. In other words they have taken a scientific hypothesis and turned it into a philosophy. And there is a whole lot at stake there!

"why do we care so much what the other side think "

-thinkS. The main reason... dark ages, I think most of us would like to see truth, rather than religious doctrine propagated. I'd prefere my children to learn how things work rather than closing their eyes and reciting goddidit, goddiddit.

I'm not interested in converting, I'm interesed in not being the target of conversion. If we give an inch, they're going to start putting up stakes next.

"just live and let live right"

-I'm all for live and let live. Keep religion out of my world, and I'll help keep truth out of the churches. The problem is that one of the tenets of organized religion is the duty to try and convert everyone. If they can let that go, we got no problems.

"i ask again why does it matter so much to us that everyone thinks the way we do"

-I answer again; see above. They can think what they want, quietly. If it's forced on me, I'll act to get rid of it.

As an atheist, I am the literal antithesys to everything that the christian believes.

As an evolutionist, I am the direct antythesis to what the creationist believes.

As a passivist, I am more than happy for the other side to have their opinion as long as it is not imposed on ANYONE that I ever meet, ever!

The point is that belief is personal, not congregationary. The second that a belief is preached, it becomes a subjective truth but is preached objectively, i.e. there is no other truth but this.

You haven't been in a science classroom in the deep south usa, then. It's scary. Recently, a 65 year old biology teacher was physically threatened by a young father for teaching basic, sound science.

The head of science for Texas public education was fired a few weeks ago simply for forwarding an email about a talk Dr. Barbara Forrest was giving on intelligent design's shenanigans.

Hit the streets. There is a war going on against science.

First off do not assume that scientists are atheist, science has no stance on God and is no way anti-God, and does not/cannot disprove any truth. Science is not a religion

Second, do not assume that creationists are any less lost and blind as you are.

People that distrust their own beliefs are the blasphemers of the very truth they are trying miserably to protect. It's impossible to differentiate belief from disbelief, but relatively easy to determine truth from distrust. If you only knew the cause.

Because it's an ego trip to argue with some doof and if you can convince this doof he's wrong... wow - now that's better than sex. I mean, what can be more fun than bashing those who don't think like you? And I use the term "think" somewhat loosely here because if you aren't thinking like me, I doubt you're really thinking.

Live and let live? What would I do with all my spare time? Hey, this whole Yahoo Answers thing would go away if it didn't matter what everyone else thought.

So you're wrong again, buffalo breath...THINK about that!

See the problem here is that evolution is the entire basis for modern Biology. The religious are seeking to eliminate it from the school curriculum which would effectively assure that we would have no one qualified to do Biology research. And that would really suck.

It matters when someone puts two plates of food in front of a child and says "pick one" -- and one of the plates is poison but the child has no way of knowing that, much less knowing how to tell which food is wholesome and which is deadly.

Truth matters.

unfortunately i guess that is just human nature, for atheists it must be frustrating to have to listen to all these stories over and over again, and are trying to prove their point or facts. i guess they should let it go aswell. who cares if they do not share your point of view? who cares if a lot o ppl believe in cock and bull stories...as soon as they do not bother me or try to convert me, they can believe in flying pigs that i could not give a s**t.

There is no "debate" in the scientific community about evolution and creation.
It's a purely public and political debate because the science is in and creationism is nonsense and myth.
