My friend has a criminal record which looks quite bad. He maliciously set fire to a car when he was 19 (an abandoned shell in a field), got arrested and banned for drink driving and has a record for drunk and disorderly (fell asleep in the street).
No judgemental comments please, I know it is bad - he paid his time (12 weeks) and he was a troubled youngster who couldn't cope after his Dad died and he got into the wrong crowd.
He is a completely different person today and hasn't been arrested or in trouble since then (this was 5 years ago, he is 25 years old)
Has he got a chance or is it a no hoper? Should he even bother applying?

Krakkati - You obviously have a narrow view of the human spirit and its ability to change and reform. I pity you.

yes he should bother, but the most important thing is that he's upfront, if he tries to hid it, especially when he's answering the question "do you have a criminal record", then they will find out, and he will have no chance. What he needs to be able to do is show that he has changed since then, then they are often understanding, especially if he can provide evidence such as employment and reliable people willing to testify as to his character. Given he was young at the time and it was a decent time ago it is defiantly worth at least trying.

Five years is usually the minimum time required to ignore a criminal record. Your friend must be honest when applying but it is likely that he will be given a chance. In Australia, a clean slate for five or ten years (depending on the crime) means you do not have to admit to a criminal record when applying for a job and an employer checking your record will not find one. It's there but not for public knowledge. This doesn't work, of course, if you are on parole or have any sort of injunction against you.
Tell your friend to be honest about his record but to point out the five years as a model citizen since then. I can't speak for the Department of Immigration but I would think he will have a good chance.

You seem to be playing down his convictions. He would not have received a gaol term for the offences you have described - unless he is from Afghanistan or Iraq!
Also excuses for his behaviour re wrong crowd etc.
Yes, it is strict & hard to get into Oz with a criminal record. I reckon, & I certainly hope, he has no chance of being accepted. We don't want any more people like that - we have enough of our own.

you would be extra helpful off checking interior of Canada. i understand that there are various agencies in Australia that instruction manual you throughout the whole ideas-set of going foreign places, finding accomodation, making use of for visas, finding paintings, and so forth. so i do no longer see why Canada would not have comparable agencies.

Country is full of convicts. They are all so proud to trace their ancestry back to the convict ships that they now want clean records from visitors. She'll be right mate. Fair Dinkum.
