How old does one have to be to pick up an AK47? How old does one have to be to point and fire an RPG7? Not too old. A 5yo can do either, not as effectively as someone older, but hey, 7.62mm kills no matter WHO pulls the trigger, same with an RPG round.

South Africa is not fighting any one right now so they not going to war, actually the southern part of the African continent is fairly quiet. Other African nations and areas are in conflict and using children as soldier, both government and rebels and the ages usually start around 12 or 13 for fighting soldiers and some younger are used as ammo carriers and other tasks and those can be as early as 10. This is common in the Conga area in central Africa and countries around that area; basically tribal warfare.

What war in South Africa are you talking about? Nelson Mandela was released over 15 years ago, was elected President and a lot of other things have changed since then.
Now there is wars in Africa itself in which children are being recruited by the "leaders" to fight, but again none in South Africa

I am sitting here wondering where exactly this war is that you are referring to. South African children are not being shipped off to war.
As for the education system perpetuating this nonsense - unbelieveable. The world needs to shake it's ignorant views of South Africa.
There are however children soldiers in other parts of Africa, but surely not here.

hold it right there. Im South African, there are no kids going to war here. you are mistaking us for Congo and other mid African countries.
for the pne who said they leant it in history, your education system must do its research correctly.
South Africa is at the forefront of Human rights especially Children and Womens rights.
Our govenrment will not allow children to go to war. speaking of war. there is no war in South Afdrica so where does this question stem from?

Depends on which side you mean.
The South African Defences Forces recruited children aged 17 / 18 upwards.
Now the terrorist used kids to carry their equipment and act as messengers.
Seeing one was not a regular military but a terrorist militia then they felt the normal rules of warfare did not apply to them.
The history of "Child Soldiers" in Africa is hugh nearly every African nation pre & post Colonial Independence has used them and continues to use them.
