From the wording of your question, you sound as if you are in the UK. In the US, it varies. The much touted "average" of 25% - 30% is meaningless. My income last year skirted 6 figures and I paid less than that in total taxes including income taxes, sales taxes (VAT), property taxes, gasoline taxes and the taxes on my phone bill. Some taxpayers may shell out that much, but the typical taxpayer pays much less than that in the US.

Well I don't know what the baked beans statement means but the average person in the U.S. pays 25 to 30% in taxes, directly and indirectly from their wages.
