Most likly they were both on auto pilot, and locked in on the radio beacon so that in the event anyone on board who might actually have tried to change course would not be able to in time. Not to mention the fact that they could direct the collapse of the buildings to fall where they intended them to fall. I used to fly and that would be my best guess.

because jets like that can't go straight down, and if they went straight on, they would have risked hitting different buildings instead. The attacks were carefully planned and practiced and they knew how to inflict the most damage.
