It's 2 degrees Celsius outside. I've just had a woman knock on my door. She apologised for calling when it's so cold. She was pushing a pram with a six month old child in it. It turns out she's a Jehovah's Witness going door-to-door.

Is this child abuse?

The child was bundled up, yes. But the nose and cheeks were quite rosy

I'm in England. 2 degrees C is quite chilly for most people here.

No, not if she had the baby bundled up good. When I lived in Germany I saw people with their tiny babies in prams in freezing weather, and the babies were pink-cheeked and healthy.

No.

The winter weather described by the questioner is considered quite mild in many parts of the world, and perfectly suitable for a well-bundled child of six months. Would the questioner begrudge a new mother a brisk walk in the park pushing her child's stroller?

It seems that the first instinct of a more reasonable householder would be to invite the new mother in out of the cold for a few moments (rather than threaten to lock her jail).

Of course it is not child abuse, and I question your motives in framing your question in these terms.

I live in the (former) colonies, and we use Fahrenheit measurement here. Comes out to about 35 or 36 degrees, which is not extremely cold, especially if one is dressed for the weather.

Get a life!!!

I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness and so have been involved in preaching from a very young age. To be honest I enjoyed it because I got to knock on the door or give someone a leaflet. My parents are loving and kind and would never do anything to hurt us and I never felt that going in the ministry was a form of abuse.

No. I do not believe the people who line up with their families in weather sometimes colder than that to watch a parade are being abusive either if the babies are warm and snug.
No sane person expects parents to keep their children indoors all winter.

before I became a Jehovah Witness, we lived in new york. I have three children. I bundled them up and took them out into the cold air. children have to get use to the cold weather just as much as the hot weather. you cannot keep them inside all the time. yes we froze. why are u picking on Jehovah Witnesses, you must not like us. what if it was the boy or girl scouts soliciting at your door. we don't solicit. we tell you about Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ.

Where I live, it gets to -30 degrees Celsius.

Even when it's -5 degrees C, my non- JW neighbours take out their babies in prams just for a stroll. They say it's good for the child, seeing the child will grow up in this climatic zone, they might as well get used to it.

You just don't like Jehovah's Witnesses, do you?

As long as the baby was rugged up i see no problem. Jehovah's Witness are the most considerate people and i am sure there baby was being looked after. Better than a baby being in a house with smoking parents. Nothing more pure than nature it's self!

Was she supposed to leave her baby at home alone or in the car? If you were concerned about her child, why didn't you invite her in out of the cold?
