Pretty much what everybody else said but you also have to take time and effort in to consideration when talking about things like aged or specialty spirits. A barrel of scotch sitting around for 14 years costs money just by eating up space. That $10 jug of grocery store vodka is all tax and inflation though.

because the government taxes >cough cough< exploits >cough cough< alcohol along with tobacco products. Its the same reason pot isn't legal, because it can be grown so easily that they can't tax the living hell out of it easily. They do this with everything that is addictive/required. Take a look at gas, tobacco, alcohol, sales, income, property. Basically anything you can get addicted to or can't find a way around gets taxxed, except oxygen, but theres a man in a 3 piece suit working on that one right now.

It doesn't cost much if you're purchasing for personal use. If you go to a bar you'll get a cost mark-up of 200% (on the lowside) or more.
