My work closes next week for two weeks and the workload is really slowing down at the moment, over the last couple of days i've had periods where I have absolutely nothing to do, I can't really go home becasue I need to be there at the end of every day to take phone calls - I'm not the receptionist though I just organise peoples' inspections... I'm not sure how to make it actaully look like i'm working when there is nothing to do!!

When there is nothing to do but you have to be on the job, there are several approaches. First, you can go to your supervisor and ask for other work. If there is no other work you can do in your situation, you can improve yourself. One way is to study about your company, or study something that can improve your job skills. There are lots of books on self improvement, and many that can teach you new skills.

There is nothing wrong with reading on the job while waiting for work to show up, even if it is reading about your hobby. It is better than pretending that you are working. When I worked as a draftsman but there was nothing to do, I read engineering manuals and trade publications available in the office. Later when work came up, I was able to apply some of what I learned to my job.
