try giving your little budgie a bathe with water atleast weekly and clean the birdie cage atleast 2 times a week and clean the bottom out daily. Your budgie shouldnt be smelling and if ht/she is you need to take it to a vet if bathing and cleaning his/her cage doesnt work.

Incredible ok you want your bird to smell nice in which case you do the following:
1: NO talcum or any other cosmetic powder
2: Clean the cage 4 times a week thats base bowls perches cage bars EVERYTHING toys included.
3: Buy A bird bath or manually take your bird and give him a shower under the shower spray DAILY just water NO SOAP
These are the bare minimum basics you should be doing as a Budgerigar (parakeet to you Americans) owner.
If you own a larger parrot then the care you have to give is more labour intensive and time consuming.
But Im assuming you actually did your "How to care for" research before you bought the cute lil ol parakeet right ?

They might need their cage cleaned more regularly (don't use a harsh detergent) and if the cage is really smelly, try rinsing it in tomato juice and water, and then rinsing in clean water. For some reason this absorbs odours.
I think little budgies should just be left as nature intended - a la budgie. You never know what bad effects chemicals can have on them.
You might want to look at their diet. I know diet can cause odour problems in other species.

A budgie should smell like a budgie,so leave well alone.,don;t go ;looking for trouble.keep a clean cage in a well ventilated spot ,i like to let in some sunshine for part of the day , i think it keeps the cage free of smells .

If they are kept in a clean cage they should smell nice. If they have an odro it could mean a health problem. Otherwise, it's not a good idea. They preen their feathers and they would be eating talc which has all kinds of articifial things in it.

Forget your bird, never use Talcum Powder as Talc is a substance that once breathed in, your lungs can not get rid of Let your bird live like a bird, maybe he/she doesn't like the way that you smell either.

"No" don't put any cosmetic powder on to any bird, this is not natural and some of the contents could have fatal resultsand that includes perfume, dont ever spray Hair spray in the vicinity of your bird this could also be fatal.
The only safe solution is to let your bird have a bath or light spray of warm water.
You can use French Chalk but this was only used to clean off Show bird prior to shows.

I've always thought that budgies naturally have a very nice warm smell about them. i wouldn't worry about talcum powder or anything silly like that. they smell good all by themselves. and also it has to groom itself. and then the powder would get in it's mouth and it would become sick. *sniffles* and we don't want that now do we??

Since when do budgies smell bad???? I thought talcum powder was mildly carcinogenic. Next thing you'll have bows in their crests and lipstick on them.
