My personal favorite, you call 911 and ask what the non-emergency number is. It happens about once a week.

I work for a small town in Louisiana as a dispatcher and I hate when people call 911 for non emergency complaints. Even before I started working as a dispatcher, I never called 911 even if it might have been an emergency. When I hear 911 I think it has to be life or death situation for me to call. I also hate when there is an accident, everybody thinks they are the first person to call when really they are like number 20 that called. If I see an accident, the only way I will call is if I'm the only one on the road at the time.

I've never used 911, knock on wood... But it's just paranoia. Most people are aware of the service, but have heard stories about what happens if you call 911 and it's not an emergency. You're dealing with someone who is likely in a scary situation, add on the fact that they're afraid their problem may not constitute a real emergency in some mysterious "Book of Legal Emergencies" you have somewhere, and they react impulsively with a natural stance of self-defense.

When I was really young, about 7 or 8 I had called 911 to report my mother's boyfriend. I really hated him and wanted him arrested off the property. But the 911 operator figured out my plan, chuckled, and hung up on me! After that I have not called 911 for anything.

No, but I have called 911 on accident several times. I work in an office where we make many long distance phone calls, and we need to hit "9" to get an outside line. I'm sorry for my misdials and appreciate the patience of our dedicated 911 operators.

Don't do that, but I do call them about six times a day just to get the correct time.
