A pope wanted to Christianize the winter solstice.

That's the reason--nothing more.

The actual existence of Jesus as narrated in the Gospels is questionable... His birth is extremely questionable... Jesus is the illegitimate child of Saint Joseph. The Virgin Mary was never married to God the Holy Ghost, either! She was a single mother when she was birthing God the Son Jesus Christ! This is the only reason why the Early Church Fathers came up with the brilliant idea to keep Mary a virgin for ever otherwise the morality of the whole affair would be very, very questionable and most likely unacceptable because God the Son Jesus Christ would be vulgar b-a-s-t-a-r-d, but the perpetual virginity idea made Christianity to fly!!!

There have always been celebrations of mid winter, and yes, the current Christian holiday is probably based on one of those pagan celebrations.
What does that matter? some people say taht makes it a pagan celebration, I fail to see the logic in that.
What matters is what is in your heart during the season, we gather to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the fact that we have the date wrong doesnt really change what is in our hearts.
Yes, it is overly commercialized, and many people have lost the spirit of christmas, but if even a tiny percentage of the people celebrating Christmas stop and contemplate on the miracle, isnt that worth it?

Dec. 21 is Yuletide. The winter Soltice....the sun's birthday.
It is a Pagan festival....A great time to eat, drink and make merry.

lol well where hes from; Israel they don't get winter like us, so you see.. GaH! i hate winter, but i love christmas. The winter is nothing to look forward to, but with christmas it makes it so much more bareable. A winter without christmas would be strange, it's been going on for so many years anyways, so we should just coutinue it the traditional way.

The early Christians didn't want to be persecuted, so they celebrated it during a Pagan holiday.
