i'd go with a savage arms, they have the acutrigger installed so you can ajust the pull from 1 1/2lbs or 6lbs of pull, which will really help you from "pulling" the shop. the gun is at a very resonalble price for great shooting. I have one in a 308(heavy barrel, etc...) and right out of the box i was shooting sub MOA. I'd recommend it over a remington 700

depends on what you intend to hunt
for larger game i suggest an old mauser or lee-enfield because they are cheap and durable
for smaller game like rabbit or grouse i suggest a ruger 10/22
its hard to get them in flight but on the ground it gives good range+accuracy with least chance of spoiling the meat
or a 12ga break action shotgun is always reliable

hi there
a 760 or 7600 remington pump, i've had mine for 30 years it has taken 49 deer,in all kinds of misserable weather, the only thing i have ever had to do to it was put a little piece of velcro wool bettween the fore stock and barrel cause it would click when you put your hand on it, it is in 270 caliber, not one deer i shot ever got away, it is short light and easy to clean , for me it is the best gun and cal. in the world. good hunting.

Try looking for a used bolt action if it needs to go through some tough conditions. They are the next most reliable action to a break-action single shot.
