Was the frosting supposed to be frozen? If not, then you should let the frosting thaw or defrost, but don't heat it up to melt it. Then you'll have a mess. Thaw it until it's not too hard to beat with the electric mixer, and then beat it until it's fluffy and spreadable again. Don't put it on while the cupcakes are hot, either... they should be room temperature.

Pre-made frosting is "ready to use". Freezing it just made it impossible to spread.
Take it out and let it sit for a bit at room temp. before you attempt to frost the cupcakes with it.

Is it frosting in a can?? If so, just leave at room temp for a while, and if you have a beater of some sort, give it a little whip b-4 spreading it to lighten it up

I think you are talking about Cool-Whip, not Frosting. Yes you need the Cool-Whip to thaw out before put it on the cupcakes.

I wouldn't melt it... if you have time leave it out on the counter and let it thaw to room temperature. If you don't have time then thaw it in the microwave.
