I was working on my research project which was four pages long. I was typing and saving both on my computer and usb.. but then suddenly it said I could not save on my usb and an error message came up... so then i tried to save in my computer but it said the same thing. thennn it said it was going to save it on its own, when an error occurs it usually saves it, so supposibly it did. So then i turned off my computer and turned it back on... I checked the one i saved, or the one it saved, and the document was filled with squars all over mixed with some of my typing! and then i checked my usb but IT WAS NOT EVEN THERE! please tell me if there is a way i could restore my document!!!!, or why this happened or if i could trust my computer again....

Open the file that contains the squares mixed with characters.
It may be that the fonts are not recognized. Select the entire document and then change the font to a standard windows font like Arial.
This assumes you have not inserted webdings characters or other things besides text.
If that fixes the problem, then save it.with a new name.
As another possibility, when you open a document, check the bottom of that dialog box and make sure that you are looking for "Files of type:" * .doc
