There are medications you can take that if combined with alcohol will make you feel sick. Ask your physician.

AA only works for a chosen few who are desperate and gullible enough to switch one self-destructive mind-blanking addiction for another. Being force fed the illogical nonsense of religion rather than being taught simple truths about life is one of the reasons people become self-destructive. The things you're trying to avoid dealing with by drinking are the things you have to face and admit and forgive and let go of. This book: "Emotional Resilience" by David Viscott MD could help. Wouldn't you rather learn the truth and get on with your life than trying to blot out the pain and anger for the rest of your life?

Many people have found that they can learn to drink moderately and this is what happens to many people who hit rock bottom with alcohol. They reach a point where they've had enough sickness and accidents and trouble with the law and simply stop drinking so much. Just because you drink too much now doesn't mean you have to stop entirely.

Don't admit you're an alcoholic, which is mysticism, since you might as well say nachos are a disease. Instead, admit your hurt.

AA is a service that is available for those who want it. That doesn't mean that it works for everyone, or that everyone needs it. It is made to help those that might benefit from it. AA seems to have helped you, for a while. But ultimately it doesn't seem to be working for you. To answer your question plainly, yes, alcholics can quit drinking without AA. Many have. Most people just find it easier with AA because there are so many other people in the same situation that it gives them motivation to give up alcohol. If you can do that yourself, you don't need AA. The key is self control. If you do not have it, you better find it. Saying something like you would rather die than put in the work, doesn't give me the impression that you have a lot of self control. But I really hope you can overcome alcoholism and go on to live a happy life. Also remember, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. There is no such thing as controlled drinking. You were either born with brain connections that made you predisposed to become an alcohoilc by giving you too much pleasure from alcohol, or you permanently changed your brain through the course of your alcoholism to do that. The point is the same: you cannot have alcohol and keep control. You unfortunately are just not made to be that kind of person. But you can have the control to give up alcohol and you can live without it and enjoy other life's pleasures without it. Best of luck to you.

You say you're drinking is really bad, but you haven't said the "a" word. Are you an alcoholic? If you are, AA will make you admit it, and then they can help you. You can say what you like about them, but they have helped a lot of people lay off the booze.

There is probably more than one AA group in your community. My friend quit drinking with AA, and he said that if you don't like a bar you can always find another one. It's teh same with AA groups.

No matter what group in AA you choose, or what process outside of AA (including Jesus--and I'm a Christian) you have to want to get help before you have any chance at all. It seems to me that you do want to get help, and I wish you luck and blessings.

AA only gets 5% of it's visitor sober pretty much piss poor results. I suggest if you want to read why AA does not work
go here:
http://www.orange-papers.org/

If you want to know what does work is quit drinking is not drinking. 80% of those that recover does so by deciding to stop on their own.

If you want support their are organizations without cult like qualities google: lifering,SOS-save ourselves, or Smart recovery. They have online as well as face 2 face meetings in some areas but they also have great reading material.

or my favorite:

You do not have a disease, you are not powerless over your sobriety in fact you are responsible for your own sobriety so Good luck.

I use to love to drink and then one day I quit. I took up coffee and decided to change my life and go to college. I became so involved in my school that I didn't crave alcohol anymore and that I had to be alert for my studies and school. Maybe you should get involved in education and keep busy with somthing that will change your life for the better. I was a bing drinker and as long as I didn't have that drink I was fine. I hope this helps you. ( I am 42 years old and I got my degree and it was the best thing I ever did).

If you want to drink lousy coffee in a church basement while listening to crappy advice from folks who for the most part don't follow it themselves, go to AA. If you want to quit drinking, stop lifting the beverage to your mouth. Good luck.

AA will work for you, but you must give in, that is the key, and untill you get sick and tired of being sick and tired you wont stop. You will stop in time but it will be by death or prison. Try another AA meeting, if you dont like that one, try another. There are great people in AA who do care.
