I believe many people misunderstand the true meaning of what a "godparent" is. It's someone who sponsors a child's baptism, not a friend you chose for that title because it's "cool". So unless you have actually been baptized, then you can't technically have godparents. People technically can't become godparents either unless they themselves have been baptized. Since atheists probably have not been baptized or they rejected their religion, then they have nothing to call godparents since they don't have any.

Godparents, its just a figure of speech. Its just English. Or else what do you wnat them to call their godparents? The Chosen One?

Probably "godparents". It's not like atheists make up new words for things.

They still call them 'godparents' - they just deny that they exist. See the answers above for proof. LOL.

i guess this was meant to be clever.Do christians think that godparents are parents of god or something similar.I guess you are implying that atheist shouldnt use the term godparent because they dont believe in god but what does god have to do with godparents. If you can see one side you should probally try to see the other.

Oh, boy. Here we go again...
Do theists think they have exclusive rights to terms like this? I really don't understand these questions. What a silly idea.
Do you even know what the point of a godparent is? It mostly has nothing to do with religion.
Matija S doesn't. Who else?
