Here I would like to give legal tips for such marriage for your friend as she happens to be an American Citizen & Christian by religion. What I find in most of such cases these innocent American ladies are in blind love with Indian men are carried away with such affairs they simply do as told by the men they love or by their family to go through certain form of religious marriage according to Indian traditions that by mistake they forget the legal validity of such marriage. Now as far marriage between Indian & a foreigner is concerned in India it is legally valid & recognizable if such marriage takes place between them according to the Civil form of marriage under the Special Marriage Act,1954 in India or under the Foreign Marriage Act,1969 in any other foreign country. The USA government/ Embassy recognizes such marriage & any American citizen who wants to marry according to this Act has to take no objection letter from the US Embassy which gives permission & no objection to such Marriage along with a certification that such American citizen is unmarried or divorcee or widow or widower & can legally marry such Indian person. Now what is the type of marriage is such civil marriage ? This is a marriage which is solemnized before a Marriage Officer/Registrar in whose jurisdiction this India person resides, such marriage is solemnized after one months notice which both the parties give in presence of 3 adult witnesses. There is no RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES involved in such marriage just their presence is marked at the time of notice & on the day of marriage in presence of 3 witnesses, all the relevant document relating to their age, marital status, residential proof etc are checked & are issued a legal & valid Marriage certificate by the Marriage Officer/Registrar. This marriage certificate is valid for any purpose any where in the world. No objections with regard to religion, caste, race, nationality is taken in such marriage hence the parties need NOT to convert to be of same religion as required in any other religious form of marriage. What actually happens here in India that the Hindu men tell these foreigner Christian ladies to marry according to Hindu form of marriage as it will be valid marriage, but they don't tell that for this these Christian ladies are supposed to first convert to Hinduism. Any Hindu Marriage between a HINDU & a CHRISTIAN according to HINDU FORM is NOT VALID MARRIAGE according to the Hindu Marriage Act,1955. Any Indian Hindu man who cheats such foreigner Christian lady by not disclosing this fact or not getting married according to the legal form gets free from this Christian foreigner just by taking this plea that he never ever got married to her legally & hence their marriage is not valid but void abnito. Hope you will convey all this to your friend.

does she know what she is getting into? Their numbers are good for each other....then all is right with the world!

This is an Indian living in America right? they didn't meet on the internet...if so then it's your duty to stop that (you know the differences between a traditional hindu and american) likelihood of it working is not good... usually it only works with a liberal indian and a liberal american....good "numbers" won't make the marriage last and her wearing a sari doesn't mean she has a clue what india or indians are all about.

Touch the feet of boy friend's parents would be best gift from an American. In India this is expected from a would be daughter-in-law to seek blessings of would be father -in-law and mother -in-law. Material things are insignificant however you can give any thing which you can easily afford and innovative.

Any meeting for marriage purposes should be very cordial and memorable. As this meeting would decide the future of a relationship... She should not conceal any facts of her life from her would be in-laws, otherwise boy's parents would feel cheated not only by the 'Bahu' but also the son... which can be fatal in many cases...

She needs to study Indian culture - I think the mother-in-law rules the family. This is different than the American family. Her boyfriend should advise her on what her family likes - favorite colors, favorite flowers, etc. She should ask him what items are not available in India. They might like American quilts or things unique to America. Joy to you!

for gifts - she can take cosmetic for the sister,
for the mother cardigan or ladies warm clothing
as well as for the father too.
at the moment its very cool there in India.

if she really loves him then she have to follow the Hindu
means the boys family ways, & if she is willing to follow
then she should ask the mother, how to do thing.

and by doing this she'll mix around with them very
easily.

She may want to study a little on indian/hindu culture to learn about their mannerisms, etc. This will show the family that she respects their way of life and is willing to learn it for them.

hi,

gifts for his family: carry something small for everyone right from the grandma, would be in-laws, sisters, brothers families, nieces, nephews ...

maybe - perfumes, watches, chocolates, small toys/soft toys, video games, branded shirts, sweaters ..

success tips:
talk less & listen more
be yourself, dont over sweeten yourself
dont use bad language or crack dirty jokes
show respect for everyone
mingle with everyone rather than staying aloof, everyone likes a friendly new member
try to understand their culture and religion (not that you should implement it)

hope it works out for them
