From within the city limits, probably Swope Park; large area with not much lighting.

If you are a servious observer of the night sky, there's an observatory at the Museum of History on Gladstone Blvd. in the NE area of the city (phone reguarding availability).

Today, the winds, including winds aloft, are from the north (blowing from north to south) in the KCMO area, therefore, driving north (I-35) out of the metro area (this evening) to excape the lights and smog would be advisable. Probably, up north to Camdon Point would be far enough to give you a fair view of the sky, assuming there's no overcast.

Final option: take a "small plane" site-seeing ride: flying above 5,000 feet will usually get you above the smog and you can view both the sky and the Kansas City Plaza Christmas lights.

Leave the city. I would not have normally answered this question but I live in northern Minnesota and see the stars every night that it is not overcast. I did not realize that in a city you could not see them. That makes me sad. Try the website in my sources. Not only will you see beautiful stars, but I will give you some of Minnesota's Northern Lights.

you'd have to drive a ways out of the city if you really want to see the stars. the lights from the city will dampen and even completely mask the majority of them. the further out you are from a city, the better starviewing will be.

Get as FAR from the City lights as you can...-Or you might as well go to the TOP of the highest building you can- & look DOWN at the "twinkling" city lights, below... BOTH possibilities can be pretty "romantic..." :)
