Apparently, I live under the same rock.
Just as I did with the Dan Brown "Da Vinci Code", I will hie myself to the library to check out Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass, and any other book he has written.
The publicists know how to promote an author, don't they?

There's a controversy because in the movie there is an institution called the magestratium or something like that. It takes orphans and experiments on them in the north pole. Its supposed to represent the catholic church. many catholics are against the movie because some say it promotes aethiesm and anti-religion

The author of the book the movie is based on is an Atheist. His books are an alternative to C.S Lewis's allegory of Narnia. Some Christians don't like that.
Me? I love it :)

For some reason, Christians, without ever actually seeing it, decided it was somehow anti-christian just because a known atheist wrote the book on which it was based.

The big controversy is that in the book(s) apparently God is killed in the end, or something.
I read they soft pedal this in the movie, but organized Christianity is raising a furor; hence its initial popularity.

It might be called Nothern Lights in UK.
A movie based on 1st book of anti-religious trilogy by Pullman.
The "bad guy" in the movie is the all-powerful totalitarian church, so Catholics are taking it personally.

From what I understand a bunch of parents are freaking out cause they think it will turn their kids into atheists. They must not have very much faith in their kids or their beliefs if they think that one movie will have that much impact on them.

what about it? the author is an agnostic who is very anti religion. in the movie they changed a lot of the dialogue that was adamently against the catholic church but it basically says that christianity is evil and everybody should revolt against it.
