A deist is someone who believes that God started the universe on its path, but does not intervene to break natural laws, so does not answer prayer nor reveal himself through prophets, messiahs, or in any other way.

Basically a deist believes that the Universe was created by a God, but after doing so, God left it to run its course.

You have 2 good answers above so I will give you can example. Professor Antony Flew the former atheist (30+ years of speaking as an atheist) that had debated men such as C.S. Lewis recently said that the latest biological research "has shown, by the almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce (life), that intelligence must have been involved." His change from an atheist to a deist has got him called many impolite names by the atheistic community.

He just believes that a god somewhere started it all and to steal from Josh MacDowell put on the answering machine and left to maybe check in later... He does not believe in God, Jesus or even Allah etc.

A perosn who believes a higher power created the universe, but doesn't get actively involved, as opposed to a theist who believes that God intervenes in His creation.
