OHIP is the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. Other provinces have their own plan.

I am in Ontario and have had breast cancer (twice). There was no significant wait for testing or treatment, for instance when I went to my family doc with a concern I had a mammogram within a few hours and a radiologist report within a day.

The second round I had 3 hospital stays with no charge. I had 8 rounds of chemo and a years worth of herceptin treatments - no charge. I had very expensive neulasta shots (like $3000 per shot) after each chemo treatment which was paid for through my husband's insurance. If I had not had that insurance I would have been eligible for the Trillium fund which covers drug costs that exceed a certain percentage of the family income. After surgery I had a nurse come to our house to change my dressings and check on my progress.

I had a former co-worker who has a relative that lives in Canada. I was diagnosed with cancer this year and had surgery and treatment started within a month. She on the other hand had to pay out of pocket for her cancer test and surgery out of pocket in the U.S.. It would have taken over three months to get tested and another 4 months before any surgery in Canada.

Of course we don't pay , each province has its own insurance scheme and everyone in the country is covered by their home province. A friend of mine was sent to the US for nine weeks radiation, a special sort that they don't have in Canada, and it was paid for.

We do pay for meds that are not applied in a hospital, which many of us think is wrong. However I am safe, for the rest of my life. I can't be refused treatment or charged for medical services and I can get med service anywhere in Canada by showing my provincial card.

As long as you have health insurance you don't unless you want to try something the hospital doesn't use or go to another country to get treatments.
