Well NASCAR has its roots in the south with the Moonshine business. Plus most drivers have a southern twang to their voice and for the longest time the sports major sponsor was a tobacco company, again a southern reference.
It's all stereotypical like most things are in life unfortunately. I was anti-NASCAR until this past season. I had always assumed the fans were toothless hicks who only know how to turn left. I got free tickets to the Dover race and a Hot Pass and fell in love with the sport.
Sure there are the toothless, DARF's out there, but the US is rather varied, so since the sport of NASCAR is second to the NFL, the fan base HAS to be diverse.
NASCAR has been branching out in trying to diverisfy the fan base, including rock-n-roll bands, rap stars, and getting the drivers out there with different sponsors. (FYI some of the drivers are well-educated and well-spoken and know how to do more than turn left :) )
Those who lump people into stereotypical groups are probably just uneducated to the facts, or just plain rude. Ignore them, because when it gets down to it, they are usually wrong. :)

First of all the Klan is a racist organization that is almost defunct. The term redneck refers to Southern farmers who worked in the field all day and got sunburn on their necks. The guy who answered your question is ignorant. Some people think that since it started with bootleggers the people who like it are also bootleggers. It's not true. NASCAR has changed a lot in 60 years. Some people are just not aware of it.

Well we know that there are plenty of redneck race fans. There are probably some Klan's men fans out there. But there are also lawyers, doctors, congressmen, military, nurses, teachers, etc. that are race fans. Let the ignorant people who stereotype Nascar say what they will. They are the ones who are missing out. We don't need those kinds of people in the sport anyway.

Well Frank...welcome to the NASCAR fan base. No matter what you try to say, those who don't like the sport are the ones who are all the P/C people. Couldn't have fun if they tried.Being a country girl, call me what you like, been called it all. Truth is ...NASCAR fans are the real people. You need help, you have tons of it in a heart beat. You're hungry, go to one of the campgrounds at a race n I guarantee ya you'll get more food than u can eat. We are a wee bit of a rowdy crowd, loud at times but know how to enjoy life. NASCAR got kind of a "bad name" back in the day when a lot of the drivers ran shine n drank while they raced. That was 50 some years ago for cryin out loud. Go to a race n watch all the "upper class"...they hate the noise, the rubber that gets all over ya n the beer drinkers yet it's ok for them to run to their high$$ motor homes n drink their martinis. Plastic people...wouldn't know how to have fun if it bit them in the b^tt. Can't talk to em...they have their opinion carved in gold. Just laugh at em like the rest of us. They have not a clue about how a car works or the object of the race. I.m not saying all the rich people hate it, just most of those who don't or won't understand it. =88}

Listen to Snake, Nascar Fan are real people.. Yeah if your car or truck broke down, you would have tons of real people trying to help you out, my dad use to help alot of people who broke down at tracks, everyone has jumper cables, tools and geniune folks, sure some of them might look like Larry the Cable guy, but that doesn't make them bad people.. But its pure ignorance to say Nascar fans are all klans men..Then they have never been to a race and seen The Real People of Nascar...

Well if this is so then most of the FORTUNE 500 companies are run by these"gentlemen " rednecks.
The sports humble beginings was in the rural south thus the redneck stigma.But the klan?You'd see them at a football game first.

People who stereotype do so out of ignorance, fear of the unknown, or lack of personal experience. It is likely that someone who thinks the only people who follow NASCAR are rednecks or klansmen has not had the experience of NASCAR that most NASCAR fans do. I wonder how they feel to be dumber than a redneck?

They dont have a clue to what actually goes on in Nascar. People like that like to make fun of Nascar or someone else they are tring to be funny. They do that because they are having to make up for all their short commings they have in their life. Just a bunch of low life SOB's.

It's just a sterotype. And of course if you've been to Nascar you see that it's not only rednecks. There is rich, poor, rednecks, upperclass, family guys, single guys, single girls, couples, kids etc. Everyone goes to Nascar.
Everyone is so friendly there also, I love it!
