I lived several miles off the main roads here in Idaho for many years, we did have occassional problems with black bears, a rare time or two with a mountain lion, and yes, coyotes. In packs pf 2 or more, a coyote will take down larger game and in extreme conditions, even go after a human, and yes, that is documented. But while they prefer smaller game, they have taken deer right on my property many times. One winter, my then 10 year old daughter and my 13 year old son were playing at the rear of our home, which was surrounded by forrest, my son came running in to tell me there was a hurt puppy behind the house, I came out onto the upper deck to find my young daughter just entering the woods, and from my second story height, I could see that 4 coyotes were waiting for her, and that one was making a yelping sound, just like a puppy would. I yelled for my daughter to get in the house as I drew my colt 1911 .45 and fired at the coyotes. I killed one outright, and drove the others off. I still have nightmares of what would have happened if I had been 60 seconds slower, or not had my pistol on me. I immediatley started actively hunting coyotes there and killed off over 20 of them just on or near my property over the next 2 years.
If you are inside the city limits, you can't shoot the animal unless in self defense, and even then some idiot judge may charge you. I'd start calling fish and game and asking for help, either traps or their professional hunter to thin out the coyote population in your area. Your dogs and cats, even small kids are being threatened. If you hear one, I'd bet there are many more nearby. As for me, I'd take my own precautions to protect myself while waiting for help from F&G to act. I'm not saying what you should do in your own case, just what I'd do.

I think you would have a hard time finding a single record of a adult being killed by a coyote.

If you are even half of a man a coyote could easily be incapacitated by hand. All a coyote has as a weapon is a mouth, disable the mouth, you win. But seriously, you'd be more likely to be hit by lighting lol

Coyotes will not attack a healthy, alert adult person even if you are in their element. The only exception is if they are rabid and then you won't even hear them coming. Your cat is another story, though. If he isn't smart & spry enough to get indoors, up a tree or on the roof he may very well become a meal. A dog may try chasing coyotes but quickly find himself out numbered. If he isn't big enough and mean enough he too can become coyote fodder.

Good luck.

Apparently California coyotes are bolder than they are in other parts of the country. In recent years, there have been numerous instances of them attacking humans, especially children, and sometimes in broad daylight.

If you live in a settled area, or inside city limits, shooting the varmints will get you in deep trouble.

If you are nervous, carry a stout club or cane. An axe or pick handle will lay low the meanest coyote ever bred.

The only way you can keep the 'yotes from getting your cats is to never let them outside without you being there to watch over them.

About a 100 to 1, unless you kick it in the face or something else that will aggravate them. If they were to attack, I am sure you could easily beat them away, especially if you are holding a shotgun. So, yes, I would personally consider you a puss to just hide in the house instead of going outside. The cats on the other hand, I would worry about. You really should watch the coyotes around any cats that are outside.

Yeah I doubt you would be attacked. Try not to look or sound sick or dying though, haha.

But yeah, I don't blame you for being freaked out though....I've heard coyotes and the howling makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck......they're creepy.

I've never heard of a coyote attacking a human. The only way it could happen would be if the 'yodie was rabid, I would think.

Coyotes won't go anywhere near you. If you hear them, just yell out and make some human noises like clapping your hands loudly and they will make themselves scarce. Might be good to keep the cat in at night.

If you want to shoot them, get the proper training and licenses and observe all the laws as to when and where you can.

your cats are a food source to a coyote...you are safe. check with animal control...they might have an answer - shooting a shotgun at night outside will get you a LOT of unwanted attention.

Look at it this way..... you have a 12 gage right? they dont.... if they come at you blast them in the face, the start swinging like Barry Bonds, thats what i would do..... dont let a little coyote bother you..... especially when you have a 12 gage :)
