Some of these replies sound like they are from suburbia. Doing that is not too hard to stay alive if you know the area and have a definite plan for what you are doing(whether being supplied or living off the land etc.).

The only way to get an answer to your question is to start by taking small trips, then larger and make a list of what works and what doesn't, and become the expert on the subject yourself.

Also you then find out which way gives you the most enjoyment, whether you want to really rough it, or live more easily.

The basics for me would be a 22 rimfire with a few thousand rounds a 30-06 various loads and a 12ga with no 6, 4, shot and a small size buckshot.

Fishing equipment, including any fish or freshwater crustacean traps that might be applicable.

Some basic gardening tools, about two dozen different sorts of seeds, old style that can actually reproduce new generations, not the genetically engineered crap that finishes after one or two or produces seedless crops :)

And a lot of prior practice in tilling and planting-you can even do that in your backyard.

Tinned and sealed food as well( at least enough of this for emergenices anyway)

Some first aid supplies, do a couple of paid courses
in first aid(or even para medic level) , and see if you can get a doctor or someone to give you some broad spectrum anti biotics, worming tablets(whatver parasites or funguses you might get there)with long expiry dates, water purification tablets etc.

Good radio and training in case of an emergency.

Shelter-that's a big subject ranging from living arrangements to climate, clothing, water tanks, to fuel supplies(wood, batteries, gas lamps whatever) all part of your preferences which you will have to work out youself.

Lastly a lot of books to read and a journal and other hobbies or things you like to do or would be prepared to learn.
Skinning, tanning your kills, treating leather, drying fruit, making traps/hunting bows ,knitting sweaters, spinning wool, whatever floats your boat.Maybe making a boat too!

Be aware being alone can get boring after you have done your work for the day without people to talk to. People alone for great lengths of time do change.

Some fence menders I knew would end up talking to themselves after a couple months on big cattle properties.

Nothing permanent but it would take them a while when they got back home to get out of the habit, and to get used to people once again :)

Popular fantasy and I'll admit, I'd like to try it. Only difference is, I am pretty certain I couldn't do it and would end up being mountain cat food or Wolf food.

Takes alot more that a romantic notion and a sense of adventure.Oh, I have some of the skills needed to do the trip but am also mid 50's, heart issues and a family that I wont abandon. I get my fun practicing flint and steel fires when deer hunting. I can get by, but to go total native isn't what it is cracked up to be.

That all depends on what your mentality is. Some people could do it with little, others would cry for momma

I spend a month on the Ouachita trail every year, no rush, I just take my time. First time I went I took too much junk, for the last 6 times I only took a few basics.

Just remember, it ain't no game. If you aren't 100% sure of yourself and you knowledge of survival.. then dont do it.

A guy died recent on the Ozark trail in northern Arkansas, it appears he just died from the stress. Stress is a major factor when living in the wild.

Hypothetically in a SHTF scenario and you need to disappear, the Bighorns is a bit to open.
Being prepared is 95% intellect and emotion and 5% tools.

I'd opt for the Bitterroot of Western Montana out west of Missoula if I were intent on dropping off the face of the earth. Getting out west of Sheridan make seem like a long ways away from people, but in truth much of the land in question has open range permitted, and matter cattle people feed their stock there.

1st thing, take enough provisions to last. Make sure you have a way to treat water, wounds, take bear spray, and a 12 guage shotgun with slugs, buck and bird shot, carry enough to keep yourself fed, take fishing gear. Cloth and feed yourself complying with state game laws. If you inadventently draw attention to yourself through poaching what good would it do.

Tell us how your year was when you come back from the boonies.

There was a guy who went to alaska with nothing but some hand tools and a spare cabin to stay in while he built his.He stayed there for about 3 years. He had a guy fly in once every couple of weeks to bring him some basic groceries like milk, coffee, ect, and he would transport mail so the guy could keep in touch with his family.Other than that he lived pretty damn comfortably all by himself. He brought a rifle and probably used it a total of probably less than 5 times for food. This guy was friggin awesome though. All you really need is the proper knowledge.I would say bring some fishing supplies,a bolt action rifle, plenty of ammo,Clothes for all weather, snow shoes if there is snow, emergency first aid,and some kind of shelter.
