This question unfortunately cannot truly be answered in a forum setting. It's a very deep question which strikes at some very fundamental issues with belief, the power of organized religion and the rational faculties of man.
I highly recommend reading the book "Magic, Witchcraft, Religion." I took an entire Anthropology course that revolved around this book. Viewing religion from an anthropological perspective is quite illuminating, and I think speaks to this question. As first we must examine the role (both modern and historical) that religion (any) plays in the lives of the individual, the culture and the nation-state.
But yes, people get crazy over religion. More than perhaps anything else, especially in the context that many other things that people go crazy over...usually reflect or are tied to religion.

It isn't religion, per se, that makes people go crazy. It's the search for the truth about our existence here on Earth that makes people crazy.
Is it chance that caused us to evolve on the most perfect planet in our solar system? Or did a higher being put us here? If the higher being exists, why doesn't he prove his existence to us?
Those questions and questions about the Earth's future and humankinds' future leave people scrambling for the truth. Should you trust science or should you have faith in a god?
The problem with these questions is that there is no rightly definitive answer. There is no proof that any religion is the "right" one. There is no proof that any deity exists. All we have is the history of our Earth to quence our thirst for answers.
The popularity of religion as a subject is a reflection of the fact that some people have a profound urge to ponder life and religion.

The Human Mind is complex and the Mind of God without the proper balance of the Heart [Emotional Core] of God can generate within the Imagination of God and Mankind, those things that are overwhelming to a typical Human Being and lend to somewhat a crazyiness. The word "crazy is based on the root word craze. A craze can be just an over focusing on ONE thing and cause a neglect of other parts of life , that can cause an imbalance in an othewise well rounded Being. This need not happen in any religion that is of a positive mindset, but history has shown in the lives of a small group , it certainly can be.... My father was very set in HIS beliefs, HE told me once before HE died, He was in fact GOD. He crowned me King of the Crazies long before HE died, so all you people out there that are just plain NUTSO...YOU ARE NOT ALONE...LOL!!!

Religion is often about important and/or interesting topics, none of which can be proven one way or another. And due to the nature of religion, nearly everyone is emotionally and intellectually committed to what they think is true.
Therefore it is a supreme topic for arguing.

Its the strict order. I think chaos and freedom of thought and expression is what would come natural to humans had we grown in the wild.

Because it is something worth debating. For the religious, it's like they want to protect their religion. For me, the reason why I debate is because I want people to stop being delusional and believe in wrong things. Alot of people are like me. Alot of people are religious. thus, this is why there are alot of arguments.

to be crazy over religion is crazy in its self, no prophet has ever been crazy over it. to be passionate over it is understandable though because religion is the only subject in life that if you get it wrong could affect you not just for now but for ETERNITY. its those who dont care that drive me nuts

The "Soul" of Man (male,female).
The Soul can be conditioned to "go crazy".
The Man has to follow his,her Soul---Unless he,she Learns to "Rise Above It".
So be it.
