I was given a large amount of money and want too know how much I should be donating. I say 17 percent and my dad says 10 percent. What did you do for yours if you had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

Ten per cent is correct.
However, eighteen per cent might persuade your dad, since 18 = Chai, "life", and is considered a "lucky number" by Jews who believe in such things.
You might ask your dad why he isn't encouraging you to be as charitable as you would like to be. Since tzedakah is such an important mitzvah, one would think he'd approve!
And after all, honoring your father and mother take precedence. So probably the best outcome would be your having a discussion with your dad in which you both arrive at a good mutual understanding, and a decision you can both agree on.

The first poster has a good idea - ask other parents of bar/bat mitzvahs. Also, if the Rabbi and/or the Cantor don't want to accept anything (as our Rabbi did for our union), then make a donation to their 'slush' fund. This fund is a discretionary fund that the Rabbi uses to help others.

why don't you donate in increments of $18 (Chai) That's pretty traditional. If it's a really large amount you received, you could give $180, $360 (like double Chai times 10!), etc. mazal tov on becoming bar mitzvah!
