the only advantage is more space but if it is a big difference in price the 40gb should be plenty of space

i recommend you wait a while because sony announce at e3 that there is going to be a new ps3 model called ps3 core which has the same feature as the 40gb ( no memory card slot, two usb port, and can't play ps2 games,) but it has a bigger hard drive and a dualshock 3 controller the one with the rumble feature for 399 in america ( sorry i forgot about the release date for the ps3 core )

If you go to the playstation3 homepage you will see.. there isn't a difference in performance or PS3 features other then its 50 dollars cheaper, an less disk-space... i have a 60 gig drive in mine, and I'm going to buy the 80gig as soon as it is release...
which is pretty nifty... the hard drives can be replaced.. you can take them out of the ps3.. without removing the casing.. there is a slot on the side you unscrew something an the hard drive can come out...

so if you wanna buy a 20 gig you can ALWAYS buy the 80 gig hard drive seperatley once it comes out....it is easy to replace... you don't open the plastation there is a small port on the side you open.. to exchange it.. very simple.. as said..

but the playstation3 is super awesome.. most advanced console platform out there.. an i have not heard of anyone having any critical failures like the weak xbox 360.. which my friend had one an it broke.. an when he got the replacement.. he said he seen the console already start having the same problems as the other one did..

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

Besides the 40 gb difference, the main advantage of the 80 gb is that it can play PS2 games, while the 40 gb cannot play PS2 games. They can both play PSX games.

The other advantage of the 80 gb is that it has 4 USB ports and 3 flash drives, while the 40 gb only has 2 USB ports and no flash drives. It's not that important, but if you must upload pictures to your PS3, then those flash drives become important. Also comes in handy when you need to transfer game saves.

They both have Wi-Fi out of the box.

So, if you must have backward compatibility for PS2 games, then you have to get the 80 gb. If playing PS2 games on the PS3 isn't important to you, then go with the 40 gb. If you have a PS2, use the PS2 to play PS2 games and the PS3 to play PS3 games.

i would get the 80GB PS3 because the 40GB cannot playback PS2 games. so, it has that advantage to it.
