It was an idol.
The worst sin in Islam is to associate partner to God. An idol represent this sin. Islam does not like anything which promote. support or endorse shirk (worshipping anything beside one God).
There is nothing like Islam does not like arts, but if this art leads to misguidance then Islam won't support it.

I think if this idol wasn't worshiped it wouldn't be a problem, but this was a Buddha idol worshiped by Indians and other Asiatic nations in an Islamic monotheistic country, I also heard that the Taliban knew that there was a touristic program sponsored by Japan to make pilgrimage trips to Afghanistan for Buddhist to this same idol and that's why they decided to destroy it.

The Taliban were stupid. Most of the non Muslims wouldn’t want to live in a Taliban State. Even most of those who liked them because the were fighting “the infidels” don’t really want to live under the Talibanian authority. It’s a shame!
As for art, I think you are wrong. If you visit the Alhambra palace in Spain for instance, you’ll get an idea about the Islamic art.

How is it possible to destroy Buddha .. isn't funny .. Buddha can not protect himself .. how He is gonna protect somebody else??
Islam does not frown upon art. In Islam .. you can not draw or make the statue of living creatures like human being. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) did not allow others to make his portrait... the reason is that somebody might start worshipping Muhammad (pbuh) who is Muslim but does not have enough knowledge about Islam instead of worshipping God.

theyve destroyed alot of artifacts from other countries too. its sad how theyre erasing history. they believe that people might "worship" them, so they should destroy them.
Islam does not frown upon art. In fact, Islam has its own genre of art. I personally have a friend who makes islamic paintings and drawings and sells them at the local mosque.

EDIT also the buddha statues were NOT idols
idols are things which people pray to buddhists meditate they DO NOT pray seeing as how buddha himself said that praying is senseless you pray to nature and what can nature do for you? nothing
there s no god in buddhism

Their point of view that these ideals were being worshiped. the prophet mohammad PBUH destroyed some ideals in the Arabia peninsula at his time because it was worshiped.
Although it has been their for centuries and no muslin khalif's thought to destroy them.
