My son is almost 5 months old and has never been able to sleep on his back except for maybe an hour or two. At the most he has slept on his back for 4 hours. But he always ends up waking up screaming. Once he was able to lift his head on his own I started letting him take his naps on his stomach while watching him and he did fine. He now completly lifts his whole upper body and turns his head one way or the other while on his stomach and never puts his face down into the bed or anything like that. I have also been cosleeping with him because I dont want to put him in his bed on his stomach and leave him to sleep. But I want to know when I can. I know everyone says when they can roll over, but does that mean only from back to stomach? He rolls from his stomach to back and when I watch him he doesnt look like he is in any danger of getting into a position to sufficate, but I dont want to risk it. Please help.

It is okay to let a child sleep on their stomach once they are able to roll over on their own.

I think that if he has full control he should be fine sleeping on his belly. I would make sure that he is wearing tight pj's and don't put a huge blanket in the crib with him. I was afraid of that same thing and I had my mother in law knit a blanket for my children. The blanket has holes in it and is very light so I know if they pulled it over their head they could still breathe, and it also make mommy feel better too : ) Mom's are naturally a little paranoid my children are now 3 1/2 and 21 months and I still check on them frequently to make sure they are OK. I think you little one will be fine.

When you put him to bed, lay him on his back. If he is able, he will roll onto his tummy, and that's fine. The reason you can't start them on their tummy when they are little is because if they do start to suffocate, they don't have the strength to roll over or at least lift their head for air. As long as he is able to roll himself it shouldn't be a problem. My nephew was rolling himself onto his tummy around 4 months. He is now a happy, healthy, 11 month old!

It's funny because 15 years ago when my daughter was born they were saying to put them on their stomachs. I don't think they really know.

Here is one site that you can read.
http://www.sidscenter.org/SafeSleep/AroundtheClock.html
Note that it also advises that your baby should not sleep with you. Read this and a few more sites and make you own decision.

Nothing is guaranteed. I once interviewed a Registered Nurse who was in charge of the county's SIDS program. She was a SIDS mom herself. She told me that she had had a healthy baby. She feed it one afternoon. Burped the baby and it fell asleep with its head on her shoulder. When she went to put it in the crib, it was dead. No cough, no struggle, nothing.

My Daughter always slept on her stomach she wouldnt sleep any other way, and she was/is fine. Just make sure there is nothing in the cot like a bumper and pillow and put the sheet/quilt low and tightly tucked. I didnt put a quilt on my daughter as she hated it even in winter as long as her room was warm and she was dressed warm.

If you cut a u shape into a piece of foam and a spot for his head you still want to give him some support but it might help stop the problem.

peds will tell u when they turn a yr old.but with my 4 yr old she started sleeping on her back probley around 6 months because she will roll herself that way in the middle of the night.but if your worried about SIDS i would put your son on his side to sleep and put a pollow or a rolled up blanket around him to keep him on his side durning the night.he will sleep way better on his side anyways.

a new child can sleep on their abdomen as long as you verify on them periodically. My daughter is two months previous and has been drowsing on her abdomen maximum of the two months. I do it because of the fact whilst she wakes up and starts off crying she scoots around the mattress or roll over on her returned.
