When I talk to Christians who do not take advantage of the prayers of the saints I find they often lack faith in the concept of eternal life.

The conversation will usually go like this:
Xian: The dead know nothing.
Me: But, those who are Christians do not have death, they have eternal life.
Xian: Right?
Me: Well, Catholics believe that those people we call saints are enjoying eternal life with God. They aren't dead.
Xian: But, I can go right to Jesus with my prayers.
Me: Of course you can. Don't you ever ask friends that you know to be solid in their faith to pray for you?
Xian: Yeeeeees?????
Me: Well, I ask those people, the saints, who are in heaven because of their faithfulness to Jesus to pray for me. Have you ever looked at a saint's medal?
Xian: No.
Me: Well, look at this medal for St. Jerome. What does it say?
Xian: "St. Jerome pray for us."
Me: So, what are we actually asking is for the saint to pray for us.

The person will usually think about the discussion or jump into the "Catholics worship idols" arguement. Then I have to go into my flannel graph explanation.

Some Protestants believe devotion to anyone other than God Himself constitutes a violation of the First Commandment. To them, this means veneration/honor of Mary and the other Saints is unBiblical.

I would say "mislead", rather than "crazy". But I do agree with you that the vast majority of those who bother to make the claim you are addressing are indeed motivated by hatred/intolerance.

But, before we get to hating them back, we have to remember that most of these people were probably taught bad theology. They simply don't know any better.

Others, those who are motivated by hatred, are not worth worrying about. They are not interested in the Truth. They are only interested in adopting as their own ANY claim that can be interpreted as anti-Catholic.

Exactly - it's no accident people of this anti-Catholic ilk come out on saints' feast days.

Many other faiths do not understand our belief of asking the Saints or the Blessed Mother to intercede on our behalf. Though yes there are some (I think a small minority) that hate Catholics I don't think it makes them ALL "haters" OR "crazy", just misinformed on our true beliefs. And yes today is the "Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe", just with days like this, without understanding the why of it, and the just the title of the feast day is WHY some believe we worship Mary and other Saints. Try explaining it to those who will AND want to listen, forgive those who won't. Accuse none of them of wrong!! Peace be with you.

Persons who mock the Catholic Church are mocking Jesus Christ Himself.

But they usually do so from ignorance or from fear.

When Jesus was dying on the cross, He said, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."

Let us pray for these people who mock the Holy Church, as Jesus prayed for those who mocked Him. Let us pray that God will dispel the darkness of fear and ignorance from their hearts, and that they will one day enjoy the Resurrection and the Life together with us.

They see it different from our point of veiw. They don't look on both ends of the table and base their judgement on what they see.
