Probably best not to buy him a dog unless you have discussed it with him.
My dad is around the same age. they are so hard to buy for! Dads appreciate time and effort more than expense when it comes to presents - I think some time with you is a great present. I know it sounds corny - but time with family is important. You could do something a bit left of field - type him up a voucher something like "this voucher entitles the bearer to a day out/lunch out/breakfast date/ whatever with me your daughter/son on a Saturday of your choice" or something like that. Put a little expiry date on it and other things to make it look authentic like a shop bought one. Roll it and tie it with a bow - this will give him something to open on xmas day. The 'present' part can be anything - movies, tickets and company to a show, a day sightseeing in your own city - anything where your dad will get to spend time with you. I once gave my dad a voucher to spend the day catching the train with me and lunch at the end of the line, I bought this because everytime we drove past the train line on the freeway he would say "I wonder where that train goes, I must catch it one day to see" He says it was the best present he got that year!!
Alternatively you could bake him something and package it up (my dad has a sweet tooth so this always is popular). Or your voucher could volunteer to prepare (or buy) a picnic lunch and ride with him on his Harley to some nice spot for a picnic. - or a voucher to volunteer to accompany him on a hike he has always wanted to do. Hope these ideas help. tell us what you decide on

My suggestion would be to go and buy a standard walking cane and paint it a floresent color. get a little template put on it that says " thank you for your support throughout the years. Let me help support you in the future." This is just to get him smiling. Secound present after the walking cane is to try and get a season pass to a national park close to you or in an area that he may visit, along with some camping gear that he may be able to pack on his bikes. This will allow him have a reason and a destination for him to get away next spring or summer. I hope that this gives you a fairly pratical idea for you to go on.

Why is this in the dog section?
I got my dad the Bonanza Box DVD Set, a new coat, and my kids painted him picture frames and we put each of their photos in the frame they painted.

A digital picture frame. Does he jog/walk? One of those armbands that are made to hold your ipod or cellphone or wallet stuff.

You could get him gear for riding his motorcycles or a season of one of his favorite shows.
