Does this verse mean its ok to marry because of lust?

1 Cor 7:8-9--NIV

8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion

Sometimes for some people it might not be that easy to just go out and find someone you love that will marry you.

Peace.....Burning with Passion is not the same as Lust.....if you love someone, you naturally have a burning desire and passion to be with them intimately. If you lust, it is an uncontrollable or out of control desire stemming from a more unhealthy root. One can burn with passion for someone they love, or lust after anything in a skirt/pants.....hope this is understandable! Blessings, "orthros"

It may be the worst advice ever in the history of divinely inspired documents. That is, if it's taken at face value. I suspect that there was a specific context to the statement that we aren't privy to as modern readers. Paul was writing to a specific group of people, at a specific time, and presumably this letter was written to address specific circumstances. It would do everyone well to remember that this goes for all of his epistles.

Who knows what those circumstances were that Paul is speaking about here? Whatever they were, I know this: to take this as modern advice would be a colossal mistake. Marriage is hard work. Lust is not. The latter should never drive the former. Lust is a passing thing - and easily remedied without considering marriage - because marriage is long term. And did I mention it's hard work?

Assalamualkum.

There is somewhat a similar Hadith in Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) said that one should marry to abstain from evil.

It just means that an unmarried person who thinks he might commit adultery out of the growing lust in him should search for a wife. So that he may not fornicate or commit adultery. It saves him from the hell fire.

I think he is saying to find the one for you to marry, SO you dont lust. Meaning if they dont settle down, they will eventually just lust after others because they dont have an outlet for the desires that they may have nor an outlet to express it. (if ya know what i mean) wheras if they get hitched they can lust after their partner and "express" their love in the bonds of marriage!

in regards to your recent edit: God will bring you the person he desires for you, he already knows who they are... i prayed for mine, until i finally met him. God will direct you to your future spouse if you ask him and pray for that person daily.

Lust comes and goes. Love "True love" lasts forever.

Which one would you marry for?

Not lust per se, but normal sexual desire. God has designed people with sexual desires, and designed marriage as the place to express those desires and drives. If someone wants to remain single for the sake of their calling from God, that is ok. However, if they have a strong sex drive, they are better off in a strong marriage than frustrated!

Yes. Marriage as opposed to fornication. I mean why get married if you have no desire for sex?

Yes essentially.

Whatever your motive may be for marriage is ok as long as you stick to your committment and do the things youre supposed to do.
