And I'm a Jehovah's Witness, by the way, I am just trying to prove a point to a friend that all Jehovah's Witnesses belive the same thing....that we all believe in what is written in the Bible, and it has nothing to do with what we think is right and wrong...so I know that the first answerer is wrong....lol.

I do know the answer to this question, by the way...but like I said, I was trying to prove a point to my friend that all Jehovah's Witnesses from everywhere believe the same thing. He said that even within the same religion everyone has their own viewpoints on certain things, so there are as many religions as there are people, and so I told him how we all believe the exact same thing because it all comes from the Bible. He didn't believe me. So I figured this would be a good way to show that each and every witness believes the same thing, no matter which one you ask. So thanks for all the help guys, he totally believes it now!

That they are nothing.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5-6) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.

(Ecclesiastes 9:10) All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She′ol, the place to which you are going.

(Psalm 146:4) His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish.

(Job 14:14) If an able-bodied man dies can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait, Until my relief comes.
But there is hope for the future.

(John 5:28-29) Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.

(Revelation 20:13) And the sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Ha′des gave up those dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds.

(Acts 24:15) and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Sure...
We always want to go to the Bible for answers. If we go to the first book of the Bible, Genesis 3:19 says "In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until YOU RETURN TO THE GROUND, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return."
Clearly, this scripture tells us where we go. Does it say we have a soul that goes anywhere? No.
And then we go to Ecclesiastes 9:5, it tells us "the dead are conscious of nothing at all." Again...this verse doesn't leave any room for us to believe otherwise. And then if we jump to verse 10 it says, "...there is no work, nor devising, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in She'ol, the place to which you are going."
This proves that the dead return to dust and are merely unconscious. They are aware of nothing and can neither help or harm us. Neither are they watching over us.
She'ol is another word for "hell" that people use. So is the word "Hades." All 3 of these words simply refer to the common grave of mankind. It is NOT a place of literal fire.

If you are a Jehovah's Witness, as you say that you are, then why do you not have the answer to this question?

Does not the Bible say, to be absent from the Body is to be present with the Lord? How, then, can, you ,be in the grave, and not with the Lord?

all great scriptures from the friends. Also if you look into the consistency of the Bible and the things that are in there, even with the ones that were resurrected, like Lazaraus and the young girl, when they were brought back to life, there is nothing in the scriptures about those ones saying that they had been in heaven with God. And this is because they weren't, they were asleep in death.

If our purpose was to go to heaven, then it would be absoutely clearly stated in the Bible. Just as we have accounts and instructions on how we should live our lives, how we should strive to Imitate Jesus and his father with regards to decisions, etc. if we were supposed to end up in Heaven, there would definitely be specific things written about that. About what our roles would be, about how we get up there. If there was this "middle place" that some religions teach, that would be clearly stated. But that is not our purpose, our purpose is for the earth. The scriptures clearly state that the heavens are for Jehovah and the Earth is for Man:

(Psalm 37:11) 11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

(Psalm 115:16-17) . . .As regards the heavens, to Jehovah the heavens belong, But the earth he has given to the sons of men. 17 The dead themselves do not praise Jah, Nor do any going down into silence. . .

(Psalm 6:5) For in death there is no mention of you; In She′ol who will laud you?

(Psalm 30:9) What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit? Will the dust laud you? Will it tell of your trueness?

(Psalm 118:17) I shall not die, but I shall keep living, That I may declare the works of Jah.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.

(Isaiah 38:18) For it is not She′ol that can laud you; death itself cannot praise you. Those going down into the pit cannot look hopefully to your trueness.

After Adam and Eve sinned God sentenced them to death. (Genesis 3:19) This is exactly what he warned Adam would happen if he disobeyed. (Genesis 2:17) He did not later change the penalty to eternal suffering. The penalty continues to be death. (Romans 5:12; 6:23) Satan the devil, the first liar, contradicted God by saying that sin would not lead to death. Of course Adam and Eve did indeed die. Satan then concocted other lies to perpetuate his first lie. Now persons believe that some part of them does not die but survives either in heaven or in a fiery place of torment or as a ghost or reincarnated as another person or animal. This is NOT what the Bible teaches. The Bible teaches that the soul dies. (Ezekiel 18:4)

JW's take Ecc. 9:5 out of context. This is speaking of a physical death. When physically dead you are not conscious. I could hit the charley russells body with the nwt and get no response. The Bible talks about the deaths of two men and what happened after they died. One repent and went to heaven. The other didn't and went to hell. You either go to heaven or you become a marshmallow in hell.

“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
“Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’” Luke 16:19-31

Sweet!

Here a JW from Mexico, currently living in Canada...

The dead go to the common sepulchre (hebrew she’ohl', greek hai'des)

They will stay there in an "animated suspension" state until the resurrection begin after 'Har Ma·ge·don′

There is no life after death, nothing at all.
