So tomorrow is my first appointment in like 14 years is tomorrow after a horrid experience as a kid. I'm pretty confident that my mouth isn't TOO bad, aside from my major toothache. It happened out of the blue when I was eating jerky on a broken tooth that I got a few years ago (yeah, should have gone way sooner, I know.) My question is, will the dentist opt to pull/work on it tomorrow morning? I'm not sure if the tooth is abscessed or if it's just the nerve finally dying off. I don't THINK it's abscessed, as the pain differs from day to day, but I may be wrong. I'm trying not to research into it anymore, as reading about it being fatal is just causing me to get nervous.

Should be noted, the pain was realatively minor last week and this week. Yesterday, it shot up my jaw and back of my head, today, nothing big. Along with a minor headache all week (kind of a pain in the butt, nothing throbbing or deabilitating) but I'm reading it's a common thing.

Thanks guys. What exactly are my chances of dying from this?

Went to the dentist this morning. The tooth is severely abscessed, and tomorrow morning, it's being extracted. There was a possibility of it being saved, but it would cost $1800, and it probably wouldn't work.

Yeah, hard to diagnose over the internet - but I would just be prepared for the worst, that way if it's something less, you'll be pleased.

Also, don't be afraid to mention your aversion, they might give you something to help you relax.

(I love my dentist, he's great!)

Good luck!

I let a tooth get to that point... I was surprized to find out it could be saved with a root canal. Pulling it's much cheaper and root canals generally don't last forever... Root canals are expensive and require an expensive crown or cap before long to prevent the tooth from crumbling. You'll probably have a choice to make.

I had the root canal. I've also had wisdom teeth pulled and it didn't hurt a bit. Nothing to worry about. I've had an excellent dentist and a crummy dentist who's work seemed to fall apart. Neither one of them hurt me though... That's rare and not good for business. Try to relax :)

Oh and... I let it go for a LONG time... always had a headache... Didn't go untill I was in AGONIZING pain for a couple days in a row and Advill stopped working. I'm still alive.

My teeth were fine then one day great pain in them teeth numbered 14, 20 and 30 that's 2 lowers and 1 upper, this started 2 months ago went to 4 dentist because of my fear of numb tongue, if the dentist can save the tooth he will do a root canal the repair it if it is not to badly broken if it too badly broken then he will probably pull it if there is no abscess if there is abscess then he will probably put you on antibiotics for a week or so then pull it either way all should be good if the dentist is good, oh if you do not want the numbness for a lower tooth they can just numb that tooth not the lips, cheek, tongue, its called ligamaject injection

hope this helps and good luck

Extraction (pulling) is the last option after root canals. More than likely, some xrays will be taken and some drilling/filling will be done.

If you haven't been cleaned and examined for 14 years, I would expect you have few teeth/issues that needs to be worked. I'd expect some work be done on the first day, but I would also expect few more appointments will be needed to sort out all of your problems.

If you're having that much pain, it's abscessed. Don't be surprised if you get a prescription for antibiotics. However, he probably won't do anything drastic on your visit tomorrow morning, but will probably suggest a root canal or other necessary procedures be done very soon in order to save your tooth, probably within a week or two.

And remember, any procedures you have to endure will be brief...and then your pain will be lessened if not entirely gone.

EDIT: I doubt you'll die. If you're healthy enough to be typing a question, you're probably healthy enough to survive. :)

ok at your visit tomorrow he will take a look and should give you clyndamyacin or something along that line for infection along with pain meds. there is a possiblility of them pulling it but that depends on the infection. i had oral surgery last year and before my appt i had to use up the whole bottle of vicodin and motrin and antibiotics the pain was soo horrible. if you cannot tolerate the pain until tomorrow then go to the emergency room and ask them to give you a shot of lydocaine around that tooth it works great! i feel your pain .

Yes, let them know!! If you don't you can get a bunch of cavities, root cannals, and major infection. I had a infection and they had to rip out one of my teeth to get it out. Let the dentist know now before it gets any worse. Good luck
