I've never been in the Navy, but I'm trying understand the logistics of a sailor's discharge after completing his or her service. What I'd like to know is what city were you in? Did you come right off a ship? Or were you on a base somewhere? Was a happy event? Did it feel almost like a celebration? What did you do to celebrate?

Naval Medical Center, Oakland California. Had a retirement ceremony in the hospital's auditorium, followed by side boys piping me over the side. Returned to the Navy Lodge at NAs Alameda and spent the night with my family. We had a quiet dinner at the officers' club. The next day I drove to Southern California to spend some time with friends. Three days later I drove with the family to Southern Nevada to begin my new life.
That day was a joyous one, mixed with some sorrow because I was leaving the world I had known for twenty five years. The words of a Navy Captain I served with at Philadelphia twelve years earlier came to mind:
"The United States Navy is a foreign country. It has its own strange manners of dress and speech, its own private gods and taboos and its own totems".

I received my first discharge from the Navy in April 1972 at Naval Station Norfolk, VA. It was a very proud and happy event. I went home to the Jersey shore and partied. Shortly thereafter I returned to college and finished my degree. In the Fall of 1974, after getting married and having a son, I reenlisted and eventually completed my 20 years, retiring in December 1990. (Opted not to become an officer due to family considerations.)

After I got my paper work, I finished loading up my car and left Oakland (there is no base there now). I stopped in Sacromento to see a girl, spent the night there, then drove home.

My discharge took some time, as my ship decommisioned and the entire crew either transferred or was discharged.
