I've given my secretary one of the designer ham packages for years. While she always seemed appreciative, I'd like to switch to a grocery store gift card this year. Our company gave small ones out last year, and everybody talked about how useful they were. I'm not sure how much to give her though. It's a pretty big company, and she works for several people. I don't have control over her salary, and I guess you'd call me a middle manager. What kind of Christmas present and what value do you give your secretary?

Additional details are that she complains about being nonexempt, and has made comments that the exempts (like me) make too much money. She probably thinks I can afford to give her a car ...not true LOL! She does a good job, but may only do two or three things a day for each of the people she works for. Mostly, she answers the phone and does some filing.

People love gift cards, so you idea is a good one. I would probably put at least $20 myself into the card, and try to get the other managers she works for to contribute, as well. Then, you're looking at about $60-$100 for the gift card.
We all get together and contribute enough per-person to buy our boss a gift card for Christmas. We make the total $200 from all of us (8 people). It costs us $25 each, and the short straw gets to go buy the gift card, and a Christmas card to go with it. Good Luck!

I agree with the thought of pooling all the others who she works for and agree to an equal contribution amount from each party. The more contribution, the bigger the share of the wealth.

If each would consider $10, what would that total?
If you are unsucessful in getting everyone on board and end up doing it on your own, then $20 to $25 would be a generous amount and it at least gets a good chunk of the Roast, Turkey or whatever she uses as her main entree expense.

I used my past ones on "splurge" entress (i.e shrimp platter, cheese tray, wine, etc.) for things I normally would not have bought for my Christmas dinner (mostly family) and was thrilled with my grocery gift card

Wealthy? Try some really great scented candles. Maybe a gift basket with some flowers and candles and stuff. Have you tried Michaels if you have one there? Or even some really expensive wine? What else is there, it's the thought that counts. Good luck.

talk to the other people she works for and chip in for a really nice gift, like a $500 gift card to a grocery. (okay that's a bit much, but you get the idea)

I'd pool your resources with the other staff she does work for and get her a nice gift voucher for a beauty / spa treatment or session. Majority of girls love to pamper and indulge themselves, but it's one of those luxuries that you don't often have the money to spend on.

I'd rather get a facial, manicure and pedicure than a ham or groceries...but that's just me
