Looking for better gas mileage? Well here are a few tips: Since you say you have a truck, first, you can remove any extra weight that is not necessary to haul around. Other things you can do is be sure your engine has had a proper tune up, including the replacement of new air and gas filters, proper air pressure in the tires, a oil change wouldn't hurt, don't use "cheap" gas, purchase gas from a "high volume" retailer. and most of all, avoid "jack rabbit" starts and most of all, when you are driving, pretend there is a egg between your foot and the gas pedal. A extra muffler is doing nothing but adding restriction to the exhaust system, hence, the engine cannot "breathe" efficiently.

Gotta love all the smart *** answers people give. That particular model won't ever break any land speed records, but you can make it sound a little better. Money becomes an issue here. If your looking to spend under 1000 dollars ... intake/header/exhaust. That's all your going to get, and the only thing they'll do is free up horsepower. They don't add any. So let's assume your motor has 140 hp. Factoring in a 17% loss in HP from inertia, that gives you about 117 at the wheels, which is the important number. Adding an intake/header/exhaust will help you recover some of that lost horsepower because it cuts back on the restrictions the stock units have. From my limited experience it usually takes about a 40 to 50 horsepower increase to noticeably feel it. You won't get that. You might see one extra MPG at the pump, but that's about it (you won't lose any). They only thing you'll get is a a deeper sound. Be careful about which exhaust you choose because a lot of people frown down on the high pitched AutoZone brand mufflers. Here's some places to look: DC Sports, K&N Filters, AEM ... well that's about it actually, they are the top three reputable companies that are reasonably priced. If money is no object, drop in a K20 motor, add turbo, cams, injectors, bigger fuel pump, heads ... of course the car will still probably only run a very low 13 in the 1/4 mile with all that ... which means you'll still lose to a slightly modified WRX or EVO. Good luck to you, hope you enjoy whichever road you take.

The previous poster gave you great advice. You want a better gas mileage with power, get a diesel engine. But it will cost you more and not a good approach, your wallet will carry the burden. Those exhaust systems do increase performance but is not a lot, to the point that is neglectable. So do not waste your money on that.
The manufacturer tunes these vehicles as work vehicles. They are meant to work, not to commute or take kids to soccer practice or just a grocery getter. So is the wrong vehicle if you want to save gas or even for safety.
There is always a trade off, you want power, you need energy, hence poor fuel mileage. Want economy? Weak performance. So like the previous poster said... remove weight . Less weight less power is need it to move it, therefore less fuel is used. Also they are build with the coefficient drag of a brick, so at 70 MPH is a lot of wind resistance, therefore.... more fuel is need it.
Want to save on gas money and you do not a truck for your job? Consider a sedan or a coupe as a daily commuter.

if you install too large a mufflers on it or exhaust system you will loose too much back pressure, and you,ll actually loose gas mileage and power, those engines have to have so much back pressure to run right, release too much too fast, and you,ll loose out on power and mileage, you can actually make it run worse by trying to improve it,so be careful, when changing things on it,good luck.
